It is the site of the original entrance to Lassen Cave, a lava tube cave that was discovered in 1851. The site includes the original entrance to the cave, a stone archway, and a small stone building that was used as a shelter by early explorers. We originally planned on going to Burney Falls on July 4th 2026, but unfortunately, they have a new vistor's policy requiring people to purchase tickets online. Not only that, but there are only so many available and all had been purchased that day! A bit irritated and frustrated, we opted for Lassen Subway Caves. In the end, we weren't disappointed as that attraction was absolutely amazing! No park bureaucracy, just a cool place to go and explore! Bring flashlights as it gets extremely dark and you won't be able to see at all! An amazing natural volcanic formation nestled in the beautiful Mount Lassen countryside! There is a bit of a hike and a few stairs so keep that in mind with people who have mobility issues. I highly recommend if you haven't gone it's a great outing!

This place is pretty cool.. literally! It stays 47 degrees all year around. About 3/10 of a mile long. It’s absolutely pitch dark in the middle so bring a flashlight or headlamp. Some people also use their flashlights on their phones. Free to get in, there is also RV parking. Small walk with some stairs involved. Really a cool stop to just get out for a few. They have picnic tables to rest or have lunch. Just a fun stop . Highly recommend this cool little spot.

We've visited a few lava tubes in surrounding states and this is our favorite.  Adequate parking area with restrooms, short walk to the cave with an easy walk through the tube and no huge crowds.  There were informational reader boards in the cave.  A very nice visit

Easy 5 or 10 minute walk through the cave. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes with a sturdy sole as the ground is uneven. Bring a bright flashlight, this is a must not a suggestion.
In the video walking through the cave the past that goes dark is me turning off the flashlight, you can't see anything.

Amazing place. Went in May so wasn't super busy. In summer months I imagine alot more people but our experience was amazing. To see true darkness was amazing and the walls with the flashlights we had its just like art work. We went through the cave and up back ontop of it for the return also just beautiful

Subway Cave Lava Tubes near Shingletown, CA is an absolutely fascinating and unique experience. Walking through a natural lava tube formed thousands of years ago feels like stepping into another world.
The cave is long, cool, and naturally carved from ancient volcanic activity in the Lassen area. The path inside is fairly easy to walk, but it’s dark make sure to carry a good flashlight or headlamp. The temperature inside stays cool even during summer, which makes it a refreshing escape on warm days.
The trail to the cave is short and well-maintained. It’s family-friendly, but sturdy shoes are recommended since the lava rock floor can be uneven in places.
Things to know:
Bring a flashlight/headlamp (very dark inside)
Wear comfortable walking shoes
It’s free to visit
Best enjoyed during daylight hours
Great quick stop if you're exploring the Lassen region
Overall, Subway Cave is a must-visit if you're near Shingletown. It’s peaceful, unique, and a fun little adventure , perfect for nature lovers and anyone looking for something different. 🌋

The cave was amazing, very long and big.  You need to take a flashlight to fully enjo.  The light on our phones were just not enough.  Hearing about how they formed was very interesting and to think the lava flow was so thick is just hard to comprehend.

Great easy hike thru a cave that highlights volcanic history. It's free to visit- Bring good flash lights and good shoes. It's just a short hike but very rough footing.

is is a very unique attraction. The cave has no lighting, so be sure to bring a flashlight. You can either walk to the end and return the same way, or continue through to the exit and make your way back to the parking lot.

Very interesting and unique experience. It’s part of the park. Plenty of parking. The hike itself over to the cave entrance is short, the hike in the caves is not far and the walk out the cave to the parking lot is a bit longer than the first walk in but not long at all. Was there for about 30 minutes total. Pretty cool to walk down and see it get dark. We only had our phones flashlights and it was fine. We walked at a normal pace and it didn’t take us long at all. A def stop if you are on the north side of the park.

This was a very unique experience. It's a short hike to the entrance of the tube/cave. Definitely much cooler then the summer heat outside. It's dark, very dark, very very dark inside. Make sure to bring a good flashlight (or two). The floor is a little uneven so be careful where you step.
