LBL National Recreation Area/Birmingham Ferry
Overview
Birmingham Ferry Campground offers a quiet, nature-focused escape within the vast Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. Positioned along the eastern shore of Kentucky Lake, this site provides a traditional camping experience for travelers who appreciate solitude and direct water access. Providing a gateway to the Kentucky backcountry, it is managed by the U.S. Forest Service and serves as a peaceful alternative to the more crowded commercial resorts found in the surrounding region.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just south of Grand Rivers, Kentucky, the park is nestled within a heavily forested peninsula between Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake. The landscape is defined by rolling hills, dense hardwoods, and miles of jagged shoreline. This area serves as a vital corridor for migratory birds and local wildlife. Its proximity to the North-South Trail makes it a prime spot for those looking to explore the rugged interior of the recreation area while remaining close to the water.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a primitive campground designed primarily for self-contained RVs and tents. While you will not find high-end resort features, the park provides essential comforts including:
- Vault toilets that are maintained regularly for guest use.
- A well-maintained concrete boat ramp that provides deep-water access for anglers.
- Level sites equipped with sturdy picnic tables and fire rings for evening gatherings.
There are no water or electric hookups available at the sites, making this a premier destination for self-reliant travelers who enjoy a boondocking lifestyle.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the world-class fishing and boating on Kentucky Lake, which is widely renowned for its population of crappie and bass. Just a short drive away, visitors can explore the Golden Pond Planetarium or take a drive through the Elk & Bison Prairie for unique wildlife viewing. For hikers, the Canal Loop Trail offers incredible vistas, while the nearby town of Grand Rivers provides charming boutique shopping and famous local restaurants for a day off the trail.
Who This Park Is Best For
Birmingham Ferry is best suited for adventurous RVers who prefer a rustic, off-grid experience over manicured concrete pads. It is an exceptional choice for dedicated anglers and kayakers who want to stay just steps away from their next catch. If your travel style involves disconnecting from the digital world to enjoy starlit nights and the authentic sounds of the Kentucky woods, this quiet lakeshore retreat will feel like a perfect fit.

Went to see so we could see the sands in winter pool. It was pretty neat being able to walk across.

Oct., 2024 - 2nd visit & I love the quiet & lake views. Cleanest vault toilets I’ve found! Picnic tables, fire pit & dumpsters. No water, but met some wonderful campers!

Beautiful, peaceful place to camp. They have some sites close to others, and some more secluded sites. Water access from both ends of campground. Highly recommend.
