LBL National Recreation Area/Gatlin Point

Overview

Gatlin Point is a rustic gem located within the southern portion of the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. This campground offers a peaceful retreat for RVers who prioritize scenic lake views and a quiet atmosphere over high-end resort luxuries. Situated on a peninsula of Lake Barkley, it provides a sense of isolation that is perfect for disconnecting and immersing oneself in the natural beauty of Tennessee’s backcountry. It serves as an authentic gateway to the wilder side of the region.

Location & Surroundings

The park is nestled near Dover, TN, positioned strategically on the shores of Lake Barkley. The surrounding landscape is characterized by dense hardwood forests and gently rolling hills typical of the Tennessee River valley. Because it sits on a point, many sites offer direct vistas of the shimmering water. The environment is remarkably quiet, punctuated only by the sounds of local wildlife, making it a premier spot for nature photography and observing native bird species in their natural habitat.

Amenities & Park Features

As a primitive campground, Gatlin Point focuses on the raw essentials of outdoor living. Visitors will find gravel pads suitable for various RV sizes, though there are no hookups available for water, electric, or sewer. Each individual site includes a heavy-duty picnic table and a fire ring for evening campfires. Facilities are limited to vault toilets and a convenient boat ramp, reinforcing the park’s rugged character. It is essential for visitors to arrive with full freshwater tanks and adequate battery power.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for those staying at Gatlin Point. The on-site boat ramp provides easy access to Lake Barkley for world-class fishing and peaceful afternoon paddling. Just a short drive away, history enthusiasts can explore the Fort Donelson National Battlefield located in nearby Dover. Additionally, the Homeplace 1850s Working Farm offers a living history experience. Hikers will also find themselves near hundreds of miles of trails that traverse the entire recreation area.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is best suited for self-contained RVers who genuinely enjoy the challenge and peace of primitive camping. If you prefer a quiet, secluded wooded setting over a crowded commercial RV resort, Gatlin Point will fit your travel style perfectly. It is a fantastic choice for anglers and kayakers who want immediate access to the water. Travelers seeking a true digital detox will appreciate the remote, natural feel of this Tennessee destination while remaining close to historical sites.

We camped here in November and it was a bit cold but I loved the campsite! We were right on the lake, the area was well maintained, there’s a bathroom and a dumpster on site, there are picnic tables for each site, the payment process is easy, and it feels like you’re far from the hustle of city life which is what I wanted.

Primitive campground, one pit toilet & dumpster. No potable water. ~20 first come first served sites. Decent sized sites, not a lot of privacy between sites. Mostly shaded. Small access shore to lake. Google tried to bring us in through a closed road. Highly recommend coming in via 49 to Gatlin Point Rd. Very buggy at night. We came here to find a quiet place to camp during the week, only 2 other sites had people, but of course those people were unfortunately loud at times. If you need to play music while at a place like this, many of us would appreciate it if you'd turn it down- we don't want to hear it from the other side of the campground.

Great spot but very run down. If you charge for camping you MUST do driveway maintenance. A regular car would bottom out in more than half of the driveway inside the campground. DO THE MAINTENANCE! THAT'S WHAT WE PAY FOR!
