Locust Lake

Overview

Locust Lake State Park offers a peaceful retreat centered around its namesake 52-acre lake in Barnesville, Pennsylvania. Nestled within the ridge and valley province, this park is widely known for its heavily wooded terrain and seasonal beauty. It provides a quintessential Pennsylvania state park experience, where RVers can disconnect from the daily bustle and immerse themselves in the quiet rhythms of the forest, water, and local wildlife. The park is highly regarded for its clean facilities and family-friendly environment.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated in the heart of the scenic mountains of Schuylkill County, conveniently located for travelers exploring the Northeast. The surrounding landscape is defined by lush hardwoods and rolling hills that offer vibrant colors during the autumn months. Adjacent to the park, visitors will find expansive natural areas and small-town charm, making the entire region a haven for those who appreciate a secluded woodland setting that feels worlds away from industrial noise and heavy traffic.

Amenities & Park Features

While the park focuses on a rustic experience, it offers essential modern conveniences for RV travelers. Many of the campsites provide electric hookups and are designed to accommodate various rig sizes within the forest canopy. Visitors have access to clean bathhouses with hot showers, a convenient dump station, and a seasonal camp store for essential supplies. The park’s highlight is the well-maintained swimming beach, which serves as a central hub for summer fun, alongside several fishing piers and easy-access boat launches.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the park boundaries, travelers can explore the rich industrial and natural history of the region. The historic town of Jim Thorpe is a short drive away, offering Victorian architecture and the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway. Outdoor enthusiasts frequently visit the neighboring Tuscarora State Park for expanded trail systems and additional lake access. For a unique cultural experience, the No. 9 Coal Mine and Museum provides a fascinating look into the heritage that defined this mountain landscape.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for families and solo travelers seeking a classic camping atmosphere focused on outdoor recreation rather than high-end resort amenities. It is a perfect fit for RVers who prioritize hiking through the woods, evening fishing sessions, and lakeside relaxation. If you prefer shady campsites and a tranquil environment where the sounds of nature are the primary entertainment, Locust Lake State Park will perfectly suit your travel style and pace.

Beware: these sites are not travel trailer friendly. We booked two nights but upon arriving, we realized that there was no way to fit our trailer (only 25 ft). Trees were growing up in all the sites that were available and most of the ones without trees in the way were pointing in the wrong direction for backing into and NONE were level. Called the office, they told us what other sites were available and we tried every one. Only one was remotely suitable for a travel trailer and we had to drive the wrong way through the loop to be at the right angle to even try backing it in. No luck. I’m honestly shocked that they label some of these sites as RV friendly because wow. We left and had to find other accommodations. Trying to get a refund and currently navigating their phone system/trying to get a refund. Three phone conversations later and I’ll have to call another number on Monday to get the right person to issue the refund. We’ve never stayed at PA parks before but if they’re all like this, then it makes it really hard to plan when some sites are fine for trailers and some aren’t even close. Just heads up. UPDATE: Called back during business hours and got the “park manager.” Could only give a partial refund for one of the two nights. I said that they weren’t clear on the condition of the sites and he said there was nothing he could do about it.

For our 1st time there, we enjoyed our time. The trails are well marked and we walked all the way around the lake. The staff are very friendly and courteous, assisting with everything we needed.

Locust Lake State Park is a campers' park. The beach is in the far end of the north campers' area with no parking. For day use, you would have to park at the park entrance and walk in. There is also separate visitor and camper boat launches. With over 280 campsites, the park is rather compact and includes separate tent and camper areas. The park includes a camp store, modern facilities, three playgrounds, boating, fishing and hiking. A bicycle path encircles the lake. There is seasonal hunting and ice skating and fishing when the ice is thick enough. For day use, nearby Tuscarora State Park can be a better choice.
