Lower Hermosa Campground
Overview
Lower Hermosa Campground offers a quintessential high-mountain camping experience nestled within the San Juan National Forest. This rustic site provides a serene escape for travelers who prefer a closer connection to nature over modern commercial amenities. With its scenic location along the Hermosa Creek, the campground serves as a peaceful basecamp for those looking to disconnect and enjoy the quiet sounds of the rushing water and the surrounding pine forest atmosphere.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just north of Durango, Colorado, the campground is perfectly positioned for those traveling along the Highway 550 corridor. The site is characterized by its dense forest canopy and high-altitude setting, providing plenty of natural shade and cool mountain air during the summer months. Surrounded by rugged terrain and wilderness, the area acts as a gateway to the spectacular San Juan Mountains, making it an ideal spot for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a primitive-style campground designed for self-contained travelers rather than those seeking full-service hookups. Visitors can expect basic facilities, including vault toilets and well-maintained fire rings at each individual site. The campground is best suited for tent campers and smaller RVs or travel trailers. Due to the site's remote nature, campers should arrive fully prepared with their own water supply and waste management equipment to ensure a comfortable stay.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The campground serves as an excellent starting point for outdoor recreation. The nearby Hermosa Creek Trail offers world-class hiking and mountain biking opportunities through pristine wilderness areas. For those visiting in the warmer seasons, the proximity to Durango allows for easy day trips into town to experience the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Additionally, the surrounding national forest lands provide endless miles of forest service roads perfect for scenic drives or quiet wildlife viewing excursions.
Who This Park Is Best For
Lower Hermosa Campground is ideal for self-sufficient adventurers and those who prioritize peaceful surroundings over luxury resort amenities. It is the perfect choice for travelers seeking a quiet, budget-friendly stopover while exploring the majestic San Juan Mountains. Because the sites are basic and lack electricity or water hookups, this location is best suited for experienced RVers who value primitive, dispersed-style camping combined with quick access to regional trails and mountain landmarks.

This review is based on me driving through and not staying a night here. The road in is about 5 miles off the 550 and is a little rough and windy but doable with a trailer..this place was empty except a camp host who never came out of his camper to acknowledge us and 2 tent campers that were staying days beyond the date on the post. It looked a little sketchy so I would not come back here to stay but check it out YouTube to see if you'd like it. It may suit your needs

Great place, pretty quiet except for ATV traffic on dirt road during the day. Price is $18/night in 2025 but no water! For that price, they should at least haul in a 500 gallon tank. Yes, I realize the USFS info page does say no water but honestly, what exactly is the $18 paying for?

Really well kept campground, nice campsites that offer good privacy. Direct access to Hermosa Creek trail. Great place to camp with the family and do some riding.
