Lundy Canyon (Mono County Park)

Overview

Lundy Canyon Campground, managed by Mono County, provides a rustic and breathtaking escape for travelers looking to immerse themselves in the high Sierra landscape. Tucked away at the end of a winding road near Lee Vining, this park is far removed from the highway noise of the 395. It offers an authentic primitive camping experience where the primary focus is the raw beauty of the California wilderness.

Location & Surroundings

The park is nestled deep within a steep-walled canyon, characterized by dramatic granite cliffs and the constant sound of Mill Creek flowing nearby. Just a short distance from the shores of Lundy Lake, the scenery changes drastically with the seasons, from vibrant summer wildflowers to some of the most spectacular fall foliage in the Eastern Sierra. The surrounding Hoover Wilderness provides a stunning backdrop for every campsite.

Amenities & Park Features

Travelers should arrive prepared, as this is a dry camping destination. The park features basic amenities designed for self-sufficient visitors. While you will not find luxury hookups, the focus remains on the natural environment. Key features include:

  • Vault toilets and basic sanitation facilities.
  • Picnic tables and designated fire rings at every site.
  • Direct access to Mill Creek and hiking paths.

There is no potable water on-site, so filling your tanks before arrival is essential. The sites are generally small, making it a better fit for smaller motorhomes or vans.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

This location serves as an excellent basecamp for exploring the Mono Basin. Visitors are within a short drive of world-class geological and historical sites:

  • The surreal limestone formations of Mono Lake.
  • Bodie State Historic Park, a well-preserved ghost town.
  • The eastern gateway to Yosemite National Park via Tioga Pass.

Outdoor enthusiasts will find incredible hiking trails leading to cascading waterfalls deeper in the canyon, offering unparalleled photography opportunities.

Who This Park Is Best For

If you enjoy boondocking-style camping and want to be steps away from world-class hiking, this park fits your style. Gorgeous creek flows through this campground. There is occasional trout plants in early summer which can occupy the family. It's not a very deep creek but not overly fast either. Can soak in it but be aware the shaded areas with in this campground have mosquitoes. Bring your bug spray. There is also bears that frequent this area so don't leave food or sweets out.

We want to camp at the lake, but that campground was closed due to flooding. Some of the spots seemed a bit cramped. There is decent privacy with trees between spots. We found a good spot close to one of the restrooms. There is limited area to explore due to all the willows by the creek.

Beautiful campground... Still has yellow leaves but they all turning brown. I wish I had come earlier so I could see so many fall leaves.

Great campground!! Very clean bathrooms. It's about 15 mins to the Lundy Canyon Trailhead. Remember to bring cash to pay for your campsite. We stayed here 1 night last weekend before our backpacking trip. There was still some fall color around.
