Mammoth Campground
Overview
Mammoth Campground is a popular destination for travelers looking to experience the northern section of Yellowstone National Park. Nestled within a grove of trees, the park offers a rustic, high-altitude camping experience that remains one of the few spots accessible for RVs in the area. The campground provides a quiet, natural setting where you can truly connect with the rugged wilderness of Wyoming while maintaining convenient access to the park's primary road system and essential travel services.
Location & Surroundings
Situated near the north entrance of the park, Mammoth Campground sits at an elevation of approximately 6,200 feet. The landscape is defined by dramatic limestone terraces and open sagebrush meadows where elk are frequently spotted roaming near the campsites. Being located just a short distance from Mammoth Hot Springs means you are perfectly positioned to explore the northern geologic features of the park, surrounded by stunning vistas and the unique high-desert topography of the Montana-Wyoming border region.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground is designed for those who appreciate a traditional camping atmosphere rather than a resort-style setup. Each site is equipped with a fire ring and picnic table to facilitate outdoor dining under the stars. While the park does not offer electrical, water, or sewer hookups, it provides access to vault toilets and potable water spigots throughout the grounds. It is important to note that the site is generally best suited for smaller RVs due to length restrictions, making it ideal for those with camper vans or compact travel trailers.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Staying at Mammoth Campground puts you in the heart of some of the most iconic sights in the region. Visitors can easily walk or drive to the famous Mammoth Hot Springs Terraces to witness the steaming travertine formations. Additionally, the Albright Visitor Center is nearby, offering deep insights into the park's history and geology. The location serves as an excellent base for wildlife viewing, as the northern range is widely recognized as one of the best areas for spotting bison, pronghorn, and predators.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is perfect for nature-focused travelers who prioritize proximity to wilderness over luxury amenities. It is an excellent choice for those who are self-contained and prefer a back-to-basics approach to exploration. If you are a landscape photographer or an avid wildlife enthusiast, the convenience of waking up near the terraces and the rolling hills of the north entrance makes this park an essential stop for your Yellowstone itinerary.

Wonderful quiet campground perfectly settled in the nature. James and his wife are incredible campsite hosts and always there if assistance is needed. Bathrooms are modern and new and heated.

Great campground, well maintained. Hosts are friendly and amenities are great. Only issue I take is generator hours shutting you down at 8pm. Better have good batteries or solar generator to get you through the evening. Bathrooms were great. Make sure to obey bear rules, otherwise they will cite you. Traveling buddy almost got on 10 campsites away for leaving his grill out while he filled up on water. Otherwise great location, real close to Gardiner. Kind of a windy road but it has stuff if you need it.

Amazing place to stay inside the park. The sites are great, and the restrooms are well kept.

It was a good place to sleep. Wake up and see everything covered in snow, and soon after, about eight bison. It was spectacular. The showers weren't running, and only one bathroom was open during the winter season.
