Marathon Motel & RV Park
Overview
Marathon Motel & RV Park offers a unique blend of high-desert charm and modern convenience. Established in 1940, this family-owned property provides a welcoming basecamp for those exploring the rugged landscapes of West Texas. It is well-known for its expansive desert gardens and its commitment to preserving the natural beauty of the Trans-Pecos region, making it much more than a simple roadside stop for weary travelers. The atmosphere is peaceful and authentic, reflecting the historic spirit of Marathon.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in the quiet town of Marathon, the park serves as the primary gateway to Big Bend National Park. The surroundings are defined by sweeping mountain views and vast desert horizons that change colors dramatically at dusk. Because Marathon is located in one of the darkest regions of the lower 48 states, the park is a premier destination for amateur astronomers and stargazers looking to experience the Milky Way without light pollution. The high-altitude air provides a refreshing escape from the Texas heat.
Amenities & Park Features
The park provides spacious RV sites equipped with full hookups including 30 and 50-amp electricity. Travelers can enjoy well-maintained gravel pads, clean restrooms, and private hot showers. A standout feature is the outdoor fireplace and brick courtyard, where guests often gather to share stories at sunset. Additionally, the park offers reliable Wi-Fi and on-site laundry facilities to ensure a comfortable stay during long-haul desert trips. The property is also meticulously landscaped with native plants and cacti.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
While Big Bend National Park is the main draw, located just a short drive south, guests can also explore the historic Gage Hotel and its lush gardens within walking distance. The Post Park offers a scenic spot for birdwatching and local picnicking just outside of town. For those interested in science and history, the McDonald Observatory and the artistic town of Alpine are within easy driving distance, providing a rich variety of West Texas culture and shopping for visitors to enjoy.
Who This Park Is Best For
This location is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and nature photographers who prioritize access to Big Bend but prefer a quieter, more intimate setting than larger commercial resorts. It is particularly well-suited for stargazers and dark sky seekers who want to utilize the dedicated on-site telescope pads and clear night skies. If you appreciate a rustic, historic atmosphere combined with modern RV amenities, this park fits your travel style perfectly for a memorable West Texas adventure.

We did not stay here, but we did use this location to start gaze and it is an excellent location. There is limited light and there different areas to sit and watch the stars. This was an amazing experience, for a family coming from a big city location and we hardly see stars.

The Dark Skies star party was a great addition to our Big Bend itinerary. Bill is enthusiastic and knowledgeable and the whole experience was a treat. Thanks Bill!

Very remote location with a great view of the night sky. As with most southwestern RV parks as one was gravel. Be careful turning in the entrance if you're driving a 45' class A - Our rock guard was crushed upon entering. Very friendly and helpful staff.

I stayed at the RV park recently to do Astrophotography. Only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is they are sensitive of ambient light, but there was super bright lights coming from the rear of Rooms 9/10 that was obstructing viewing at the telescope pads. You’d think they would have darkening shades on these rooms.

A very affordable place to stay in Marathon. Bill did an excellent job with the star party. Campers driving around were a nuisance with their headlights. I stayed only 1 night, Thursday, because there was a wedding that weekend and fully booked. So call before you reserve online to learn of any similar (possible loud party) events. The one bed room was small and “rustic” with no fridge or microwave. No snacks or breakfast at the office (which is fine, just get them beforehand). If you like to take videos of trains (a.k.a. Railfanning) it’s a good locale as you can see the signals turn for an upcoming train. You can quickly go across the highway for a good shot. Clerks were friendly. I’ll stay here again.
