Marten River Campground
Overview
Marten River Campground serves as a serene gateway to the natural beauty of Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park. Tucked within a dense boreal forest, this campground offers a peaceful retreat for RVers looking to reconnect with nature. The sites are known for their exceptional privacy, as they are carved out of mature spruce and poplar trees, providing a secluded atmosphere that is increasingly rare in modern commercial parks. It is a place where the gentle sounds of the forest take precedence over highway noise, offering a true northern escape.
Location & Surroundings
Situated on the northeastern shore of the massive Lesser Slave Lake, the location is defined by its proximity to pristine natural sand beaches. The surrounding landscape features the rising Marten Mountains, providing a stunning backdrop to the vast waters that often resemble an inland sea. Visitors are often struck by the expansive horizon lines and the diverse wildlife that calls this northern Alberta wilderness home. It is a geographically unique spot where the boreal forest meets the water, creating a distinct and refreshing microclimate for summer travelers.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground provides a comfortable balance between rustic camping and modern convenience. It features powered campsites that accommodate various RV sizes, though those with very large rigs should check specific site dimensions during planning. Essential facilities include clean flush toilets, hot showers, and a convenient sanitary dumping station for easy maintenance. For families, the park offers a well-maintained playground and an amphitheater for seasonal educational programs. Firewood is available for purchase on-site, ensuring your evenings are spent around a traditional campfire.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Adventure seekers should not miss the drive or hike up to the Marten Mountain Viewpoint, which offers panoramic views of the entire lake basin. Just a short distance away is the Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation, a world-class facility perfect for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. The nearby Devonshire Beach provides miles of shoreline for sunbathing and swimming. For those interested in local ecology, the park’s interpretive trails provide deep insights into the region's flora and fauna while offering excellent photography opportunities.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for nature enthusiasts and families who prioritize outdoor activities like fishing, hiking, and birdwatching over resort-style amenities. It is a fantastic choice for RVers who enjoy a quiet, forest-immersion experience and appreciate the layout of a traditional provincial park setting. If you are looking for a quiet basecamp to explore the shores of the lake while enjoying the privacy of a heavily wooded site, Marten River is a perfect match for your travel style.

Another beautiful visit. Wide empty beach area with driftwood and shore birds. Plus that stellar sunset.

The beach is beautiful. Water is excellent for swimming temperature right now. The only draw back is many people don't pickup after them selves.

Nice campground. Only pit toilets in the loops but not disgusting at all: no smells and are cleaned regularly. The main building with the flush toilets and showers is a bit far. And some campsites are double campsites, so be careful with your reservation. The beach by the lake is beautiful.

The pit/vault toilets here are impressive. The one in loop D would always surprisingly smell nice. What I like most about this campground is the easy access to the lake. You could hear the waves at night, too. It’s definitely therapeutic to hangout at the sandy beach. Lastly, it’s worth mentioning that the coin-operated warm shower costs a dollar per 4 minutes. It can be enough if you don’t wash your long hair.

Awesome place to camp with the family! The shower house is a little dated but in working order. $1 for about 5min shower time. The beach is a little rocky in some places, but nice. You have to wad out to get to deeper water, so fishing from shore doesn't work. The stairs down to the beach are a little sketchy. The patch system is nice. Km's to walk the dog.
