Martin State Forest
Overview
Martin State Forest offers a rugged, back-to-nature experience in the heart of southern Indiana. Established in 1932, this sprawling destination covers over 7,800 acres of lush hardwood hills and deep ravines. It is a quiet retreat designed for travelers who prefer the whispering leaves and starlit skies over the hum of a busy commercial resort. The atmosphere here is intentionally low-key, preserving the natural heritage of the region for a truly peaceful escape.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just east of Shoals, IN, the forest sits within a landscape defined by dramatic topography and unique sandstone outcrops. The surrounding area is famous for the East Fork White River, which winds through the nearby countryside and offers beautiful vistas. The forest itself feels secluded and immersive, with a dense canopy that provides excellent shade and a sense of isolation from the outside world, yet it remains easily accessible via US Highway 50.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground at Martin State Forest features electric hookup sites that cater to RVers seeking a more traditional camping experience. While the facilities are intentionally rustic, including vault toilets and seasonal drinking water, the park is well-maintained. For recreation, the park offers three scenic ponds stocked for fishing, several miles of rugged hiking trails, and well-spaced picnic areas equipped with fire rings and tables for quiet evening gatherings.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
A visit to Martin State Forest is incomplete without seeing Jug Rock, a unique freestanding sandstone formation located just outside the forest entrance. Hikers should not miss the trek to the historic fire tower, which offers breathtaking panoramic views of the rolling Indiana wilderness. For those willing to drive a short distance, the historic resort towns of French Lick and West Baden provide additional sightseeing, dining, and architectural tours within a thirty-minute radius.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for nature enthusiasts and RV travelers who prioritize peace and quiet over luxury amenities. Because the sites are tucked into the woods, it is best suited for smaller to mid-sized rigs rather than massive motorhomes. It is a perfect match for those who enjoy primitive-style camping with the added convenience of electricity, making it a favorite for hikers, birdwatchers, and families looking to unplug.

Awesome state forest and campground. Not too busy and two lakes to fish from.

Gorgeous isn't the right words. More like breath taking. Went night fishing and for it being a holiday weekend it was so empty and peaceful. The sounds and echos of the owls were amazing.

My husband and I chose Martin State Forest to hike in the autumn of 2023. We hiked the Hardwood Lake Trail and the Martin Lake Trail. Both trails provided stunning lake views and perfect autumn color! We will be returning in the spring to hike the Tank Springs trail!
