Mashamoquet Brook

Overview

Mashamoquet Brook State Park offers a serene escape into the heart of Northeast Connecticut’s Quiet Corner. This destination is renowned for its lush wooded landscape and its deep connection to local colonial legends. For RVers, it provides a peaceful environment where the focus remains on the natural world rather than modern distractions. It is a place where history and nature intersect beautifully for a relaxing traditional camping experience.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the picturesque town of Pomfret, CT, the park encompasses nearly one thousand acres of rugged terrain and dense hardwood forests. The park is defined by its historic stone walls and the gentle flow of the brook that shares its name. The surrounding region is famous for its rural charm, offering scenic drives through winding backroads that lead to local farms, orchards, and quintessential New England landscapes.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a rustic camping destination centered around the Wolf Den Campground. Most sites are nestled under a heavy canopy of trees, offering excellent privacy and a true forest feel. While the park does not provide electric or water hookups at individual sites, it features essential facilities like potable water stations and a seasonal dumping station. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, encouraging a classic campfire experience for all visitors.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The park is a hiker’s paradise, featuring the trail to the famous Wolf Den, where Israel Putnam allegedly faced a wolf in 1743. Visitors can also enjoy a designated swimming pond with a sandy beach during the summer months. Beyond the park gates, the nearby town of Putnam offers world-class antique shopping, while the Air Line State Park Trail provides miles of level gravel paths perfect for cycling and long walks.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is best suited for self-contained RVers and outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize a quiet, primitive setting over a commercial resort atmosphere. It is an ideal spot for birdwatchers and hikers looking to immerse themselves in the natural history of the region. If your travel style involves unplugging and enjoying the sounds of the forest, Mashamoquet Brook is a fantastic choice for your next New England trip.

Beautiful property but unfortunately the trails weren’t marked very well. The blue markings on the trees were very faint or not at all. We ended up off the trail but were able to get back on using my phone. It would be a great Boy Scout project to improve the trail markings.

Love the trails and it is very quiet walking/hiking through. We have seen maybe 6 people tops, enjoying the trails while we have been there. This has really turned into or go to spot. Like when my parents took us swimming many, many years ago.

Great place to hike the trails and just get out in nature. Lots of nice shaded areas to beat the heat!

Great place for a great hike and sweat. Also a nice cold stream to cool down. Will be my go to place when I am nearby. Loved
