Overview

McClure Point Recreation Area serves as a premier destination for water enthusiasts visiting Lake McClure in central California. Situated along the eastern edge of the San Joaquin Valley, this park offers a classic lakefront camping experience that balances outdoor adventure with essential comforts. Visitors are drawn to the sprawling vistas of the surrounding foothills and the direct access to one of the region’s largest reservoirs. It is a well-maintained facility managed by the Merced Irrigation District, ensuring a reliable and scenic environment for seasonal travelers and weekend explorers alike.

Location & Surroundings

Located near the small community of Snelling, the park sits at an elevation that provides sweeping views of the Sierra Nevada foothills. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills and golden grasslands that transform with the seasons. Being positioned on the western side of Lake McClure, McClure Point offers some of the best sunset views over the water. The surrounding geography is rugged yet accessible, making it a convenient base for those transitioning from the valley floor into the higher elevations of the California gold country.

The facility caters to RVers with a variety of site options, including many that provide water and electric hookups. For those traveling in larger rigs, the park offers spacious sites that can accommodate modern motorhomes and trailers. On-site amenities include restrooms, hot showers, and a convenient dump station for self-contained units. Water access is a primary highlight, featuring a multi-lane boat launch ramp and designated swimming areas. The park also provides paved roads and picnic tables at each site, ensuring a functional and comfortable stay for families.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Activity at McClure Point centers heavily on the water, with boating and jet skiing being top draws during the summer months. Anglers frequent the area for its diverse fish population, including bass, trout, and kokanee salmon. Beyond the lake, visitors can explore the historic town of Snelling or take a short drive to the Merced River for additional fishing and rafting opportunities. For those willing to drive a bit further, the park serves as a gateway toward the western entrance of Yosemite National Park, making it an excellent staging ground for regional exploration.

Who This Park Is Best For

This recreation area is ideal for families and groups who prioritize water-based recreation and a social camping atmosphere. It is particularly well-suited for boat owners who want the convenience of camping within minutes of a launch ramp. My first time ever going to this lake. The lady you stop at to pay to get it was so nice and professional, I didn't catch her anybody. She had tattoos and she was awesome and helpful. The lake was so nice and peaceful clear Waters. I will be back again.

My only complaint is that the water for swimming is 6 miles away from camp. The views of the lake are amazing, friendly rangers, there's showers but the water isn't consistent with hot or warm but heck your camping! At least you can you the restroom and shower after a day in the lake.

I went there to fish with family and friends. no one was at the entrance booth kiosk and there was no cell service to get the pass online. I went in looking for someone and I couldn't find anyone. Sure enough when I got back to my vehicle there was a ticket. Ridiculous. Horrible experience and service. I finally found someone working the park and they were horrible. Ranger 38 was of no help. Instead of hearing me out she immediately expected us to pay a 70 dollar ticket. Then she tried lowering it. It's a scam. Ranger 38 is horrible. Please be aware. I will not be returning and don't recommend anyone else go. They purposely trying to get money through false tickets. Ranger 38 made it worse. BE AWARE. I've been there many times before never had incident this is new. Idk who Ranger 38 is but horrible human. She should be ashamed.

It’s a decent lake with very few options for day use areas. If you have a boat it’s great but It only has one small area to swim at that’s surrounded by fisherman all day. If the splash zone is closed there are little no options to do anything there.
