Stayed Sept 28 to October 1st 2025 Site #1, no water or electricity. Cellular, T-Mobile LTE to 5G Awesome view of Lake Superior as long as no one is on site 15. Shower/Bath, about 100-300 feet depending on how you walk. Newer facilities and clean, separate showers from the shitters. Staff, 5-stars. Firewood $5 cash only, did not burn well and I didn’t have my moisture meter to measure. Aurora was out every night after 10pm. Found a few Yooperlites on the beach area.

I only got to go here once and for a short time, but it was worth it. I came here to watch the sunset over Lake Superior and I was not the only one. Many other people were there to capture the beautiful scene but it was in no way over crowded. The sunset was beautiful and I wish I could see it over and over again.

Although some sites are better than others, we had a great time camping at this state park. Electric hookups are available only at some sites that are on the concrete. Water spigots throughout. Great showers and restrooms. Depending on your location, it might take 5-10 min to walk there..unless you want to use vault toilets. Perfect for bike riding. Beautiful beach if you enjoy rock picking. Just be aware of mosquitos and flies. If you don't have a net cover, eating outside might be painful!

McLain State Park is one of those places where you can truly just relax and have fun, enjoying the simple beauty of nature. I spent my time mostly on the beach, and it was genuinely such a great experience. The sand was clean, soft, and perfect for sitting down and enjoying the views of Lake Superior, which were beautiful and calming. One of the best parts about this park is that it’s dog-friendly, so I was able to bring my dog along and watch them run around, play in the sand, and just enjoy the day as much as I did. It made the experience even more special to see other dogs having fun, and the friendly environment made it easy to let your pet enjoy the outdoors safely. There’s something so peaceful about being able to sit down on the sand and listen to the waves while enjoying the fresh air without feeling crowded or rushed. The park itself is well-maintained, and there’s plenty of space to find a quiet spot to yourself if you want to read, have a picnic, or just take in the scenery. I appreciated how accessible it was and how easy it was to just show up, find a spot, and immediately start enjoying the day. It’s a place I would love to visit again anytime I need a simple escape into nature, and it’s perfect for anyone looking for a dog-friendly beach where you can truly unwind. If you’re looking for a peaceful, beautiful spot to spend a day, McLain State Park is an excellent choice that will leave you refreshed.

Beautiful state park with campsites located right along the lake. Not many hiking trails, but plenty of nature to see in the area while you stay there. You’re able to walk the beach to see a lighthouse and there are lots of unique rocks along the shoreline. Nice facilities - flushing toilets, running warm water, and open campsites. (If you’re hoping for a more private campsite, this may not be the best place to look.)

Beautiful place to watch the sunset. Don’t recommend the beach in the summertime unless you love getting ate up by flies! It’s still a good experience though, I still went just not to swim.

We spent two weeks camping at McLain State Park. We took day trips out to the area of spent the day in the campground swimming in Lake Superior. It was peaceful and pleasant. The bathroom and showers are nice and well maintained. Even the vault toilets are well maintained.

The beach was great for rock picking and the sunset was amazing! 😍 I understand the campground will be closing 8/2024 for renovations and should feel brand new in spring of 2025. However when we visited the latrines were full. To the top. 🤢 And the neighbors were the worst we had experienced in a week of camping. I was glad to cut our stay short.

Awesome state park right on the lake. I always find it a relaxing spot to either go for a hike or do photography. The grounds are always clean and the people at the front booth are always super friendly. I would recommend checking out this spot if you have the time! This spot is also a wonderful spot for checking out the northern lights. There are parking spots just right of the beach, so it isn't like you have to hike a long distance if that isn't your speed. There is also a small playground in the campground section of the park if you are out there camping and have kids. It's nothing huge, but it would definitely suffice. 😀

Great State Park with Lake Superior views a Lighthouse and Splendid Superior Sunsets. This is a very beautiful well-maintained campground with new restroom/bathhouse. The roads are paved and easy to get an RV around. We enjoyed it so much we stayed there 2 extra nights. The rock collecting is very good especially in the designated swim area. We found a couple Yooperlites at McLain as well as some local nearby Township/County Parks. Be aware the Public Swim area closes at 10pm. You can’t drive back there at night for rock hunting. There is ample spots along the shoreline and break wall to the lighthouse to fish. There are also many walking paths through the woods and near Lake Superior. The nicer playgrounds for kids are toward the public swim area too. We were there 4 nights with 3 kids who only had bikes and loved it. The playgrounds for campers kids are lacking and really need to be improved. There is a beautiful gazebo you can experience magnificent sunsets at. The campground has a road that’s partially closed due to Lake Superior taking part of the campground back. There’s still many beautiful sites left to either be on the shoreline or get a spectacular view of the lake from your site. The campground has very spacious sites for the most part. The State is very conservative with site estimates where you can fit a larger camper than the measurements state. A very nice campground that would have gotten better ratings if they increase the playgrounds for the kids. Beware cell service is terrible. A great place to truly get away from work if your on vacation. We really enjoyed it and definitely will come back. If I could give it 4.5 stars I would.
