Medicine Bow-Routt/Hog Park

Overview

Hog Park Campground offers a serene escape deep within the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests near Encampment, Wyoming. Situated at an elevation of approximately 9,400 feet, this rustic destination provides a true alpine experience for travelers seeking solitude and natural beauty. The park is located just north of the Colorado border, making it a unique gateway for those exploring the rugged high-country wilderness of the Rocky Mountains. It is managed by the U.S. Forest Service, ensuring a well-maintained environment for outdoor enthusiasts.

Location & Surroundings

The campground is nestled on the scenic shores of the Hog Park Reservoir, surrounded by dense stands of lodgepole pine that provide ample shade and a sense of privacy. The journey to the park involves traversing gravel forest roads, which adds to its secluded nature and keeps the atmosphere quiet. Visitors are treated to spectacular views of the Park Range peaks, creating a dramatic backdrop for a high-altitude camping adventure. The surrounding landscape is a mix of shimmering water, thick forests, and open mountain meadows.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional National Forest facility, Hog Park caters to those who prefer a dry camping experience over modern resort luxuries. The campground provides essential features to ensure a comfortable stay, including:

  • Vault toilets located conveniently throughout the loops.
  • Potable water available via a manual hand pump.
  • Trash collection services during the peak summer season.
Each site is equipped with a heavy-duty picnic table and a fire ring, perfect for cooking or enjoying cool mountain evenings. While there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups, the well-spaced sites offer a level of peace and quiet that is hard to find in more developed parks.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find a wealth of activity right at their doorstep, particularly those who enjoy trout fishing on the reservoir. The calm waters are also ideal for non-motorized boating, such as kayaking or paddleboarding. For hikers, the proximity to the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail offers world-class trekking opportunities through diverse terrain. Wildlife enthusiasts should keep their eyes peeled for moose, elk, and various mountain bird species that frequent the surrounding forest and the edges of the reservoir.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is a perfect match for RVers who value wilderness immersion and a break from technology. Because of the winding access roads and specific site dimensions, it is most suitable for smaller trailers, truck campers, and mid-sized motorhomes. It is an ideal spot for self-contained travelers who want to disconnect and enjoy the raw beauty of Wyoming's high country. If you enjoy waking up to the sound of the wind through the pines and a view of a mirror-still lake, this is the place for you.

The campground itself was Amazing! DO NOT follow Google maps. If it takes you to a offroad road DO NOT attempt it, it's the wrong way. Head back to highway 70 and continue there you will see signs. Camp sites were closer than expected but still great.

Amazing!!!! So much to explore. Clean restrooms and nice campgrounds! And of course, good fishing! Can't wait to return! Oh! And very affordable. 5 bucks per vehicle if you use tents.

This is a beautiful place to go to, but be ready for a ride. The GPS tells you that you have close to 17 miles from the main road to the camp grounds and will take an hour to get there. It does not lie! The road that goes in is in terrible shape with washboard roads that will shake you and your vehicle around. We had our new camper receive some interior damage from the road, but will admit, it was worth the views. If they could fix the roads a little, my family would go back.

Definitely don’t follow the gps unless you have 4WD, which takes you to 550 from the town of Encampment. Instead, keep going past encampment on 70w and catch 550 about 6 miles down. There will be a sign to turn that says ‘hogpark campground’ . The road from here is an easy gravel road that any car could do. Keep driving on the gravel rd about 40 mins to the campground. There was no camp host, trash or water service when we went Labor Day weekend 2021. Someone took our reserved campsite and refused to leave. Because there was no camp host there is no reinforcing of the reservations, but luckily there were plenty of other sites open. Beautiful campground near the water, most of the sites are pretty close to each other though.

Very peaceful and quiet. A little challenging getting here, definitely don't follow directions on Maps.
