Medicine Bow-Routt/Sugarloaf
Overview
Sugarloaf Campground offers a high-altitude escape within the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests near Centennial, Wyoming. This destination provides a rugged and immersive nature experience for travelers who appreciate the raw beauty of the Rocky Mountains. It is a preferred spot for those seeking a rustic stay where the air is thin and the scenery is spectacular, making it a true alpine getaway for RVers who enjoy dry camping in a pristine environment.
Location & Surroundings
Set at an impressive elevation of approximately 10,800 feet, the park sits amidst the Snowy Range Mountains. The campground is surrounded by subalpine forests and is situated between the shores of Lewis Lake and Libby Lake. Visitors are treated to direct, breathtaking views of Medicine Bow Peak and the quartzite cliffs of Sugarloaf Mountain, offering some of the most dramatic and photogenic landscapes in the entire region.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional National Forest site, the park focuses on a primitive experience. Amenities include vault toilets and drinking water available via hand pumps during the peak summer season. Each individual site is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring for evening campfires. There are no hookups or dump stations available on-site, so travelers should arrive with full fresh water tanks and sufficient battery power to remain self-contained during their stay.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for visitors in this area. Hiking enthusiasts can access the Medicine Bow Peak Trail directly from the vicinity, which climbs to over 12,000 feet for panoramic views. Anglers will find excellent trout fishing in the nearby alpine lakes, while the Snowy Range Scenic Byway offers a beautiful drive with numerous pull-outs for photography and wildlife spotting, where marmots and pika are frequently seen among the rocks.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for self-contained RVers who prefer solitude and natural scenery over modern resort luxuries. Due to the tight turns and smaller site pads, it is best suited for small to mid-sized campers, truck campers, and van lifers. If you are a landscape photographer or a dedicated hiker looking for immediate trail access to high-altitude peaks, this campground provides the perfect rugged basecamp for your Wyoming adventure.

We started staying in more campgrounds this trip and this was our first in medicine bow. Nice quiet camp with breath taking views. We got rained out our 3rd day. Hiked up to South gap lake with our dogs. Trail was pretty busy but great temps. Will come back again to do some more hiking.

My second time here. One of the most beautiful places I've been. Great host. We'll cared for.

Absolutely amazing campsite, one of the best FS campsites I've visited. Just opened in July starting with first come first serve and still had snow in the campground. However temperature were gorgeous, shorts and a T-shirt the whole time and barely needed a sweater ever. There's tons to do around the campground and in the area. Lots of alpine lakes around the area. Hiking trails to tour around the lakes or go up to the summit. Still some snow you have to cross on the trails at this time of year but it was melting fast. The hike to the top of medicine bow was a little sketchy at the very top with snow so I just scrambled to the side to get to the top of the saddle for the view but didn't bother with crossing all the snow for the actual summit. The lakes by the campground are great for a little put around in the kayak and some people were fishing there also. Lots to explore if you have OHVs or dirt bikes although not all the roads were open yet because of snow. Water hand pumped in campsite but no hookup for a hose for RVs, trash cans and bathrooms available. Definitely a must visit, and one to remember for the future.

Beautiful location and the camp host was one of the nicest people I've met on a trip. The bathrooms are just vault toilets, so pack & prepare accordingly. Also keep weather in mind, as nighttime temps can drop significantly at this altitude. The campground is a short walk from the lakes and several trailheads, and the views are incredible.
