Millerton Lake SRA
Overview
Millerton Lake SRA offers a sprawling natural escape in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Managed by the California State Parks system, this destination surrounds a massive reservoir formed by the Friant Dam. It serves as a vital recreational hub for those seeking a blend of water-based activities and rugged terrain. Visitors often find the atmosphere to be more rustic and nature-focused than a traditional private resort, providing a genuine outdoor experience under the California sun.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just north of Fresno in Friant, the park is characterized by its rolling oak-covered hills and the expansive blue waters of the San Joaquin River. The landscape changes dramatically with the seasons, showing vibrant greens in the spring and golden hues in the summer. Its proximity to the Central Valley makes it an accessible retreat, yet the elevation and geography provide a distinct sense of isolation from the nearby urban centers.
Amenities & Park Features
For RV travelers, the Dumna Campground provides electric and water hookups, making it a preferred choice for those wanting some modern conveniences. The park includes multiple boat ramps, allowing easy access for motorized vessels and kayaks alike. You will also find a convenient dump station and potable water near the entrances. While some sites offer shade, many are open to the sky, so bringing an awning or outdoor canopy is often recommended.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Water sports are the primary draw here, with ample space for boating and jet skiing across the lake’s surface. Anglers frequent the area for its healthy populations of spotted and largemouth bass. On land, miles of trails invite hikers and mountain bikers to explore the northern shores. During the winter months, the park becomes a prime spot for wildlife viewing, as bald eagles are known to nest and hunt along the quiet canyons.
Who This Park Is Best For
This recreation area is ideal for active families and water enthusiasts who prioritize access to the lake over luxury resort amenities. It is a fantastic choice for those traveling with boats or personal watercraft looking for a basecamp. Because of its open layout and hilly terrain, it also appeals to travelers who enjoy scenic sunset views and a slightly more rugged, traditional camping experience in the heart of the Golden State.

This is a really nice lake-based campground. Bathrooms are clean, well stocked, and have running water. Pay showers are available and $1.25 will buy you 5 minutes. Water heats up right away so no time wasted waiting on warm shower water. Camp host is always around if you need anything. Boat launch and day use areas are clearly marked. Basic tent sites and full hookup sites are available. Dog friendly.

How can you go wrong with lakefront camping? Picked a site separate from the others, and found it clean and everything in good shape. I was in the fort miller loop, and everything was especially peaceful. Restrooms were decently clean Unfortunately, I ended up having to bail out late due to weather (severe thunderstorms, tornado warnings) so i cant speak to morning activity, but would love to take another shot ...hopefully with better weather.

Campsites are nice. Bathrooms are clean. We only stay during the week. I hear it gets pretty busy and loud on the weekends. Just wish they would do something to control all the ground squirrels. They get into everything. Have to watch your vehicles too. They go under the hoods.

Very relaxing at midnight tonight. I know, it's too late, very quiet. It's a nice place to go camping. I've been going there for many years. And I hope you guys will do. The guy's at mail till late is doing a great job taking care of the campsite and it's really. Nice to go there and relax and have a good time.

This is our second visit. The camp hosts are super nice. The sites are clean and all have a fire ring, and a picnic table. Bathrooms are clean. Beautiful sunsets. And today a man road through on a horse, the second time he road through he was carrying an American Flag. This was the highlight of my day. It brought tears to my eyes.
