Mina Lake Recreation Area

Overview

Mina Lake Recreation Area offers a serene lakeside escape in the heart of South Dakota's sprawling prairie. This park is historic for its man-made lake, which was one of the first established in the region, providing a peaceful retreat for water enthusiasts and nature lovers. The overall atmosphere is incredibly laid-back and natural, making it a favorite for those who appreciate quiet evenings and colorful sunsets reflecting over the water.

Location & Surroundings

Situated approximately 15 miles west of Aberdeen, the park sits nestled along the winding shores of Mina Lake. The surrounding terrain is beautifully characterized by rolling plains and clusters of hardwoods that provide a habitat for local wildlife and migratory birds. Its easy access from Highway 12 makes it a convenient stop for travelers crossing the state, while still maintaining a remarkably secluded and private atmosphere.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features a well-maintained campground with electrical hookups available at many of the spacious sites. RVers can take advantage of the essential dump station and modern, clean bathhouse facilities. For recreation, the park includes a multi-lane boat ramp, a fishing pier, and several shaded picnic shelters. Families often gather at the playground or the sandy swimming beach for classic summer fun and afternoon relaxation.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Fishing is a primary draw here, with the lake regularly stocked with walleye and panfish. Boating, paddleboarding, and kayaking are popular ways to explore the hidden coves of the lake. Just a short drive away, visitors can explore the famous Storybook Land in Aberdeen, which is a must-see for families. Nature lovers can also venture to nearby wildlife refuges for premier birdwatching and nature photography during their stay.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is absolutely ideal for outdoor-oriented families and avid anglers looking for a quiet, reliable basecamp. It is perfect for those who prefer the rustic simplicity of a state recreation area over the noise of a high-traffic commercial resort. If you value scenic lake views and a slower pace of life, Mina Lake Recreation Area provides the perfect atmosphere for your next South Dakota journey.

Sep 1, 2025 . Essentially empty except for two other campers. Gorgeous campground with spacious sites; lots of trees; insect & frog soundscapes….and mosquitoes; clean bathroom and showers (with good power). The map doesn’t represent the generous space between sites. (Several others we would have chosen). Also, for camping, at the entry kiosk choose “entrance license” which is good until 4 pm the following day (or the last day of your visit—submit number of days camping—yes, this daily fee is on top of camping cost). It’s a beautiful park for day use, too: small water craft dock; playground; green spaces.

Sites were close to one another and somewhat open. The lake view was beautiful! Pretty quiet place to stay. The bathrooms! Oh, the bathrooms! So clean! And the showers were way above average for a campground.

We stayed in the cabin on the lake. Nice spot but could use more shade. The bathrooms looked new and very clean. The wood situation could be much better, inconvenient to say the least. This is a boating lake, very busy well into the evenings.
