Mississippi Palisades
Overview
Mississippi Palisades State Park is a sprawling 2,500-acre natural wonder perched along the steep limestone bluffs of northwestern Illinois. This historic site, recognized as a National Natural Landmark, offers RVers a chance to immerse themselves in a rugged landscape shaped by the flowing Mississippi River. The park balances its preservation of deep wooded ravines with accessible camping facilities, making it a staple destination for those traveling the scenic Great River Road through the heart of the Midwest.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just north of Savanna, IL, the park provides dramatic overlooks of the confluence of the Mississippi and Apple Rivers. The terrain is characterized by massive limestone cliffs and jagged rock formations that stand in sharp contrast to the surrounding agricultural plains. Visitors are often struck by the sheer height of the bluffs, which provide some of the best elevated river views in the region, especially during the vibrant fall foliage season when the canopy turns brilliant shades of gold and red.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground at Mississippi Palisades is well-equipped for various RV setups, offering over 240 sites with a mix of electrical hookups and primitive options. RV travelers benefit from essential on-site amenities such as flush toilets, showers, and a convenient sanitary dump station. While many sites are nestled deep within a dense forest canopy providing excellent shade and privacy, the park maintains accessible roads and pads suitable for many modern recreational vehicles, ensuring a comfortable stay in a wooded environment.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts can explore 15 miles of rugged hiking trails, including the popular Sentinel Trail, which leads to unique rock pillars and sinkholes. The park is a premier destination for rock climbing in Illinois, though specific permits are required to scale the limestone faces safely. For those preferring the water, the nearby boat launch offers direct access to the Mississippi River for world-class fishing and boating, while the historic town of Savanna provides charming local dining and antique shopping just minutes away.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for travelers who prioritize immersion in nature and physical activity over resort-style luxuries or paved concrete pads. It is a perfect fit for wildlife photographers hoping to spot bald eagles or hikers looking for an elevation-heavy challenge. Families and solo RVers seeking a quiet, rustic atmosphere will appreciate the lack of urban noise and the abundance of starlit nights. If your travel style involves scenic vistas and crackling campfires under a thick forest ceiling, this destination is a must-visit.

Beautiful view, we arrived early - around 7am during the week and had a wonderful time. We hiked around 10 miles, mostly on the scenic and more difficult southern routes before trying out some of the northern trails. We hike on a fairly regular basis and did not have any issues though heavy rain would have made it more challenging as well as having any sort of balance issues as there are some steep areas. We only encountered 5 other hikers total during our trip making it very peaceful. It was a little over a 2 hour drive for us (from the Chicagoland region) but absolutely worth it!

The state park is beautiful, plenty of picnic tables and places for large groups or spots to get "away " from others. Trails looked to be well maintained , and the campground in spots looked like plenty of room between sites. I tent camped there and our spot was great !

Mississippi Palisades State Park is a lovely park overlooking the river. It is well maintained, nice green spaces, woods with trails & views of the River, picnic areas, clean restrooms, and rock climbing. We're hikers, so we combined Sentinel, Pine, and Sunset. Maps are at the rangers office. There were some wider paths, but I liked that most of the trails were narrow "goat-paths", especially, leading to lookout on Sentinel and all of Sunset. Pine is the longest and leads to the Twin Sisters. We did 4.6 miles between them all, and ended the day very tired.

Truly amazing. The trails are on the campsite and in the State Park. The flowers, mushrooms, frogs, and bird songs labor day weekend were magically. Bathroom/showers were very clean and the hosts were friendly.

Mississippi Palisades is a beautiful state park. You can find wild flowers everywhere. Lots of good trails and overlooks to just sit and enjoy the views of the Mississippi River. Ozzie's has the best view at sunset. The campground has many sites, large and leveled. Some with partial or no shade, however. We've camped here many times and it's almost always full, yet pleasantly quiet and enjoyable. The restrooms are clean and in decent shape. The drawbacks: The mosquitoes do tend to get bad in the evening and there is little to no signal in most areas of the campground.
