Montana de Oro

Overview

Montana de Oro State Park, often referred to as the Mountain of Gold due to its vibrant spring wildflowers, offers one of the most rugged and beautiful coastal experiences in California. Located along the scenic Central Coast, this park spans over 8,000 acres of cliffs, canyons, and beaches. For RV travelers, the Islay Creek Campground serves as the primary base camp, providing a rustic and immersive way to experience the sound of the Pacific Ocean and the tranquility of the coastal hills.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated just south of Los Osos and Morro Bay, tucked away from the main highway to ensure a peaceful atmosphere. The surroundings are characterized by dramatic sea cliffs and secluded sandy beaches like Spooner's Cove. The geography shifts quickly from coastal scrub to peak elevations, offering diverse vistas that include the iconic Morro Rock in the distance. This location feels worlds away from the bustle of urban California, making it a true coastal sanctuary for those seeking nature.

Amenities & Park Features

RVing at Montana de Oro is a dry camping experience, meaning there are no hookups available at the sites. The Islay Creek Campground offers primitive amenities including pit toilets and potable water faucets located throughout the loops. Each site is equipped with a fire ring and picnic table, perfect for evening gatherings. While the park can accommodate smaller to mid-sized rigs, it is essential to check length limits as many sites are best suited for vehicles under 27 feet.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find endless activities within the park boundaries. The Bluff Trail provides an easy, accessible walk with stunning views of tide pools and crashing waves. For those seeking a challenge, the hike up Valencia Peak offers panoramic views of the coastline. Mountain biking is also popular on the inland trails. Just a short drive away, you can explore the Morro Bay Embarcadero for local dining or visit the famous Morro Rock for bird watching and photography.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for nature-focused travelers who prefer the sound of the wind over the hum of an air conditioner. It is perfectly suited for van lifers, truck campers, and owners of smaller travel trailers who enjoy boondocking. If you prioritize direct access to hiking trails and coastal scenery over luxury resort amenities, Montana de Oro will be a highlight of your Central Coast road trip. It is a must-visit for those who value solitude and natural beauty.

One of my favorite spots on the coast. Miles of ocean front and miles of trails to explore. Cheap camping and all around great place

Montana de Oro is one of the most beautiful beaches to visit. It's usually very quiet with these than 20 people on it at most. The shore is all kinds of small rocks rather than sand. I wouldn't say its too great for water play because the water is usually pretty cold but it sure is beautiful. There is a pit tiolet and small parking lot as well as 1 or 2 picnic tables. They also offer a few disabled parking spaces. There are many miles of walking trails in the surrounding cliffs and even nice campground. The tree lined drive is an easy 10 or 15 minute ride from nearby Los Osos.

One of the best hikes in US. Great hidden gem! Do the bluff trail and feel like I’m a world away. Great to bring friends & family ✨🤍

We were visiting Los Osos before Thanksgiving and visited this State Park for the first time. It is a picturesque state park. We hiked the bluff trail which is an easy trail. The views were spectacular.

Try the Spooner beach and Bluff trails. Very nice view and the surrounding is quite, the only sound is the sound of water wave touch the rocks…. the sound of sea… and the sky is blue… the air is fresh… Short walking trail (0.3-2 mile) but worthy. Quite a few benches/wooden seats along the trails. We got the driving instructions (from San Luis Obispo downtown to Bluff Trail), from the car’s GPS and the Google map… My car’s GPS shows less than half hour driving, and the Google map shows about 1.5 hours driving. Surprisingly, my car’s GPS is correct.
