Moon Lake Rec Site
Overview
Moon Lake State Recreation Site offers a peaceful retreat for travelers navigating the rugged Alaska Highway. Located just a short drive from the community of Tok, this park serves as a scenic oasis known for its rare swimming beach and calm, clear waters. Unlike many of the more commercialized roadside stops, Moon Lake provides a genuine Alaskan wilderness experience where the natural beauty of the interior is the primary attraction for weary road trippers.
Location & Surroundings
Situated at Milepost 1332, the park is nestled within a dense forest of spruce and birch trees about 15 miles northwest of Tok. The centerpiece is the crescent-shaped lake that frequently serves as a landing strip for Alaskan floatplanes, offering a unique spectacle for visitors. The surrounding landscape is quintessential interior wilderness, providing a quiet buffer from highway noise while remaining easily accessible for those heading toward Fairbanks or the Canadian border.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a dry camping facility designed for those who appreciate simplicity and self-sufficiency. The site features 15 primitive campsites equipped with picnic tables and fire rings. While there are no utility hookups available, guests have access to vault toilets and a hand-operated water pump. The most popular feature is the sandy beach and dedicated swimming area, which is a rare find in this region, along with a boat launch and a covered picnic shelter.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
While the lake itself is the main draw for swimming, boating, and fishing, its proximity to Tok allows visitors to explore local history. You can visit the Tok Visitors Center to learn about local wildlife or browse unique northern crafts. For outdoor enthusiasts, the lake is an excellent spot for kayaking or watching the sky for the northern lights during the shoulder seasons when the nights begin to darken again in late summer.
Who This Park Is Best For
Moon Lake is ideal for self-contained RVers who prefer a rustic, natural environment over a crowded commercial resort. It is a fantastic choice for families looking for a safe place to swim and play in the water during the warm Alaskan summer days. If you value a quiet lakeside setting and the chance to see bush planes in action, this recreation site is a perfect alternative to standard highway pull-offs.

Wow and, wow. I have been to many state campgrounds and Moon Lake SRS is one of the best. Clean, well made and absolutely lovely. Just off the highway, it is a great stop on your travels or perfect destination. Bring your watercraft if you want to get out on a nice, calm lake. There is a small but very nice beach. Every site has a decent view of the lake and there is a nice buffer between them. The toilets even smelled like fresh paint! As the sun set I was thinking the only thing we need is a loon calling across the lake. i had to wait for the morning but sure enough, the loon call was there in the morning mist.

A nice campground but for our wilderness taste, the sites are kind of close together. Nice lake. Locals seem to drive through frequently just to look around? Very close to Alaska highway so lots of truck noise.

Great for kids and pets. Excellent bird viewing and little goat trails to walk on in the woods. Very nice new campground.
