Mormon Island SRA

Overview

Mormon Island SRA offers a peaceful retreat for RVers traveling along the Interstate 80 corridor. Named after the historic winter campsite used by pioneers heading west, this state recreation area provides a scenic backdrop of water and woods in the heart of the Platte River Valley. It serves as a comfortable balance between a convenient highway stopover and a destination for those seeking quiet outdoor recreation. The park is well-regarded for its clean facilities and its location within the unique Chain of Lakes system.

Location & Surroundings

Situated near Doniphan and Grand Island, Nebraska, the park is exceptionally easy to access via Interstate 80 Exit 312. Despite its proximity to the highway, the interior of the park feels remarkably secluded thanks to mature trees and the surrounding water. The landscape is dominated by clear-water lakes that attract local wildlife and migratory birds. Visitors often enjoy the open prairies and the gentle rustle of cottonwoods that define the Platte River Valley ecosystem during their stay.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground is designed with RVers in mind, featuring paved camping pads that accommodate various rig sizes and provide a level setup. Most sites offer 30-amp or 50-amp electrical hookups, allowing for a comfortable stay regardless of the weather. On-site facilities include modern restrooms, hot showers, and a convenient dump station for travelers. For recreation, the park boasts a sandy swimming beach, multiple fishing piers, and well-maintained picnic areas equipped with grills and tables for easy outdoor dining.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Anglers will find the lake stocked with channel catfish and largemouth bass, making it a popular spot for fishing and non-motorized boating. In the spring, the area becomes a world-class destination for birdwatchers hoping to witness the Sandhill Crane migration. For a bit of local history, the nearby Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer provides an immersive look at 19th-century life, while the Crane Trust Nature Center offers educational trails and specialized viewing bunkers for wildlife enthusiasts.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal choice for cross-country travelers looking for a reliable, safe, and scenic place to rest for a night or more. Because of its calm waters and beach, it is also a fantastic fit for families who enjoy swimming and easy nature walks. Nature enthusiasts and photographers will particularly appreciate the park during the migration seasons. It is perfect for those who prefer the natural aesthetic of a state park over the crowded feel of private commercial campgrounds.

Mormon Island is the perfect stop! Super convenient right off the interstate, yet once you’re set up it feels private and relaxing. Spacious campsites, friendly staff, and spotless facilities. A hidden gem we’ll definitely return to.

Fantastic place to hike, fish, star-gaze, kayak, and relax. We love all the amenities for our camping life from nice, clean bathrooms, to coun-operated showers, to great washer/dryer in the on-site laundromat. Very well maintained yet balanced with being in nature.

Stopped here for a couple of nights. Quiet little campground. Clean and well taken care of. The sites were cement and level. They had electric and also tent sites. They had multiple potable water sources around the grounds to fill fresh drinking water with, and also a separate dump station with a rinse water source for the tanks. The lady at the office was very kind and helpful! It had showers and a laundry facility for campers. Would highly recommend! Will stay in the future when I pass through again! (They had a camp host on site as well- which always makes me feel safe.)
