Moundville Archaeological Park is a National Historic Landmark located in Moundville, Alabama. It is the site of a prehistoric Mississippian culture settlement that was occupied from around 1000 AD to 1450 AD. The site includes 29 earthen mounds, a plaza, and a defensive ditch. The mounds were used for ceremonial and political purposes, and the plaza was used for public gatherings. The site is now a museum and educational center, offering guided tours, educational programs, and special events. We enjoyed our quick stop here to see the Indian mounds.  Crazy to think this was the largest city north of Mexico at one point with more than 10,000 people. We enjoyed climbing to the top of Mound B.  We spent about 45mins-1hour walking the grounds and museum.  Worth a stop if your in the area.

I wish I could have seen the museum, but the grounds are open and have signage, and there are brochures in a low mounted container next to the museum.

I think if you're in the area it's worth a visit, pictures don't do justice to the main mound. It's literally as tall as a 5 story building!

Very nice, easy visit.  The have some exhibts, but are restricted as to what they can display, until there is an agreement amongst the various tribes.

This seems like such a shame, cause every time I see these type of displays, I gain greater appreciation for their culture.  Seems like their delay is putting off  more interest in their people, history, and plight. I hope they resolve this soon.

On a positive note, this a great outdoor area to walk, bring the kids, and walk the dogs, while taking in the majestic beauty of those mysterious mounds.  The museum or exhibit area is very beautiful, super clean, with a snack bar, gift store and restrooms.

Near Tuscaloosa.  Impressive site with a lot of mounds. Amazing to think of the scale of the original ciry. The museum was nice, but I thought it focused to much on ceremonies that may or may not have existed.  I would have liked to see more featured tools and artifacts with info.  I don't care if they are reproductions.

Antique amazing part of Alabama History. I took my daughter there after she studied Moundsville in 4th grade history. She approached the site with the curiosity that I had hoped. This place is fantastic. Lots to see and the museum is wonderful as well

Loved it. Wonderful park that is part of the USA's ancient history which so few seem to know about. Family friendly and well worth the visit. Highly recommended.

Lots to see and very educational. You can drive or walk around the park. There are a few mounds with stairs that you can climb, but the others are off limits. They have many recreations and artist renditions of life for this ancient civilization. The brochures mentioned several artifacts found in the area that I couldn't find in the museum. I would have liked to have seen them as well as more authentic artifacts found in the area.

Well maintained park and museum and park. It was super hot the day I visited but I did walk the mounds on exhibit and the nature trail. I will visit again.

Take mosquito spray!!! They were really bad by the stairs and the trail there. It was a nice little stop. The museum was pretty bare and not much to see. If we went again, I would go earlier in the day and walk the entire trail. It’s not too long, but we got there in the heat and then got bit by mosquitoes right away.

Was very nice but the museum only had 2 small displays of actual artifacts.
I had visited years ago.. there was so much more to see then… it was the first time for my husband. He thought it was nice and artsy. I was expecting more of an archeological experience.. not like that anymore.

Not a golf course. It's Moundville!!! In 1300 AD this was the Manhattan of North America. But now it's probably the most serene place in AL

Their museum is very immersive
You can roller blade or bike around
And the rangers are Roll Tide

My family loves visiting Mounds throughout the South and this was a particular favorite. Many mounds, amazing artifacts, and beautiful views of the river. My only dislike was the ticket prices (free for under 5, $6 for kids, $8 for adults). It made it kind of an expensive stop for my family, but we spent almost 2 hours there and could have spent more. Maybe someday we can even stay at the campgrounds!

The museum is awesome, it has various artifacts found in and around Moundville. It's a great place to visit and spend the day, the trail was closed which is one of my favorite parts. But you can still enjoy the  mounds and they have some displays of the way life was back then that are interesting.

Outstanding Archaeological treasure of a park and museum! Museum has been greatly updated to reflect modern viewpoints in 2010. Great gift shop in museum, too. Downside is entry to park: terribly inefficient, annoying system. Even if you are a member to all UA museums, you have to park your car, go inside, wait in a tiny room with multiple other people (even during pandemic times!), and finally the cashier person takes like 20 minutes saying "Oh I don't know what I am doing, but the boss likes me hahaha, are you a senior citizen or an adult entering today?" and finally gives you papers so you can go in. Badly in need of a drive-through window or a phone app to check in! The museum and park are beautiful and amazing. Love the mounds at sunset. One nice upside is the director, who apparently is very patient with lingering visitors, as he wants to share this wonder of the ancient world. They do need some walking paths through the plaza. Don't miss the Native American Indian village and the riverfront! Also a couple of nice boardwalk paths through the woods. Enjoy!
