Mt Baker-Snoqualmie/Gold Basin

Overview

Nestled within the lush expanse of the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, Gold Basin Campground offers a quintessential Pacific Northwest camping experience. Situated along the Mountain Loop Highway, this site once served as a bustling gold mining town during the late 19th century. Today, it stands as the largest and most popular campground in the area, providing a serene forest retreat for those looking to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with nature. The towering canopy of Douglas firs and western red cedars creates a secluded atmosphere that feels miles away from civilization despite its accessibility.

Location & Surroundings

Gold Basin is located near Granite Falls, WA, perched on the banks of the South Fork Stillaguamish River. The surrounding landscape is defined by the rugged beauty of the Cascade Mountains, with dramatic peaks and dense old-growth forests at every turn. Travelers arriving here will find themselves surrounded by the scenic Mountain Loop Highway, a historic route that offers breathtaking vistas and direct access to some of Washington State’s most iconic wilderness areas. The sound of the rushing river and the scent of damp pine provide a sensory backdrop that defines the mountain foothills.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional National Forest site, Gold Basin caters to those who appreciate a rustic dry camping experience. The campground features over 90 sites, many of which can accommodate RVs and trailers, though there are no hookups or dump stations available on-site. Visitors have access to vault toilets and drinking water provided via hand-operated pumps. Each site is equipped with a heavy-duty picnic table and a fire ring for evening gatherings. While amenities are basic, the well-spaced sites and natural privacy screens made of native ferns and shrubs ensure a high degree of comfort for self-contained travelers.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The campground serves as an ideal base camp for exploring the Big Four Ice Caves, one of the region's most famous natural landmarks. Hikers of all skill levels will find plenty of options, from the challenging ascent of Mt. Pilchuck to the moderate, scenic trails leading to Lake 22 and Heather Lake. For those who prefer water activities, the South Fork Stillaguamish River offers opportunities for fishing and wading during the warmer months. History buffs can also explore the remnants of the area's mining past or visit the nearby town of Granite Falls for local dining and supplies.

Who This Park Is Best For

Gold Basin is best suited for outdoor enthusiasts and families who prioritize natural beauty over modern resort luxuries. It is a fantastic choice for RVers with small to mid-sized rigs who are comfortable with boondocking and want a deeply immersive forest experience. The campground itself is OK but pretty limited. You can walk the loop of the campground and walk down to the river, but that’s about it. However, $37/night for no running water and dark pit (no flush) toilets with no toilet paper is a scam/theft. The host was friendly. There were a lot of sites reserved for the weekend but were empty all weekend.

The campground is very nice. We stayed in a lot that used to be the middle of the CG but after the landslide and the river moved it washed out half the campground so we had Riverfront camping space. The camp host, Richard, was very nice and easy to work with. The campground is just a short jaunt down Mountain highway loop from Lake 22 trailhead, so that was nice too!

Perfect perfect perfect. Only amenities are pit toilets. Feels like actual camping, as opposed to the other campgrounds in the area which borderline feel like hotels with the extensive amenities they offer. Beautiful sites, lush moss and a beautiful river. Camp host was absolutely wonderful.

This was our first over night camping and we were lucky to find a spot. We stayed at site #77. It is a First come First serve. We reached there around 8:30am, on last week of Aug. There were 4 sites available and we picked the one close to the river. The river wasn’t overflowing but don’t be fooled by the small river. The currents are powerful and the rocks are sharp. There is only vault toilet as mentioned and it was neither clean nor foul. No cell coverage hence completely cut out from digital world. Carry $33 cash for the camping fee. The night stars were amazing. Nearest restaurant is in Granite Falls city which is 20-30 min away.

Could be a very beautiful campground. All spots have their own table and fireplace. However currently there is no running water or any other facilities just pit toilets. There was plenty space left for walk-ins. If you need a spot with water there are also Verlot and Tourlo campgrounds further down the road about 2.5miles.
