Mt Baker-Snoqualmie/Turlo
Overview
Turlo Campground is a serene retreat nestled within the expansive Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Situated along the historic and scenic Mountain Loop Highway, this destination offers a traditional camping experience focused on connecting deeply with the Pacific Northwest wilderness. Unlike high-density modern resorts, Turlo provides a quiet, forested escape where the rushing South Fork Stillaguamish River serves as the primary soundtrack for your entire stay. It is an authentic mountain destination for those looking to immerse themselves in nature.
Location & Surroundings
Located just eleven miles east of Granite Falls, the campground is completely immersed in a lush environment dominated by towering old-growth Douglas firs and western red cedars. The park sits at a relatively low elevation of 1,000 feet, making it accessible earlier in the spring season than many high-mountain sites in the region. Its direct frontage on the river provides easy access to refreshing water views and the cooling breezes typical of the rugged Cascade foothills, creating a perfectly temperate summer getaway.
Amenities & Park Features
As a classic National Forest facility, the amenities here are rustic yet well-maintained for visitors. Travelers will find paved parking spurs and accessible vault toilets located conveniently throughout the single loop. Each campsite is equipped with a heavy-duty picnic table and a steel fire ring for evening campfires. While there are no electrical hookups or dump stations on-site, potable water is available via hand pumps, ensuring a comfortable and sustainable off-grid experience for those prepared for dry camping.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
This campground serves as a premier basecamp for exploring the many wonders of the Mountain Loop Highway. Hikers often flock to this region to visit the famous Big Four Ice Caves or to challenge themselves on the steep, rewarding trails leading to Lake 22 and Heather Lake. The historic Verlot Public Service Center is located nearby, offering essential maps and local natural history. Additionally, the river provides ample opportunities for seasonal fishing and wading during the warmer summer months.
Who This Park Is Best For
Turlo is an ideal destination for self-contained RVers and van travelers who value natural beauty and solitude over resort-style luxuries. Because site lengths are somewhat limited, it is best suited for small to medium-sized rigs looking for a peaceful mountain getaway. It is an exceptional choice for Washington locals and road trippers seeking to disconnect from the digital world and recharge among the moss-covered trees and crisp air of the North Cascades.

An awesome quaint 20 spot campsite with bathrooms, drinking water, and a garbage dumpster. Some sites with electric and water hookups and all sites with campfire spots. The rivers edge is a mix of sand and rocks to explore with a great swim spot on hot days. It's been one of our family's favorite spots.

Cute little federal campground that's on the river and along a beautiful highway. We've stayed twice in sites 3 and 18, a few years apart. Pictures posted are from site 18 for Labor Day Weekend, 2024. Site 3 has decent shade when we stayed in, I believe, 2022, but site 18 is open to the sun, so it was a touch toasty for our stay. Campsites have heavy-duty picnic tables, fire pits and a level gravel platform for pitching tents. There is no water or power to the sites, but water spigots are around the campground. They have 2 pit toilets and garbage bins. A small, convenient store is just up the road for any last-minute grabs, including ice. Overall, this is a cute, rustic campground in a beautiful setting.

Best campground I've been to. Quiet and cozy, completely surrounded by forest, directly beside a river. You can hear the river rushing from all campsites and each site has a designated area for your tent with level ground. Sites are pretty private. Super friendly host that gave us lighter fluid and kindling for free, and jumpstarted our car. Pet friendly and the bathrooms were decent, non flushing but well kept as far as campsite bathrooms go. Affordable pricing as well. If you want to be surrounded by nature this is the place to go.

this is my absolute favorite campground on the mountain loop. lots of riverside sites, has running potable water and toilets. you have to male your reservation as soon as they open or by day 2 all the weekend spots will be reserved.
