Overview

Lazy Bend Campground offers a serene escape within the Mt. Hood National Forest, providing a classic Pacific Northwest camping experience. Situated along the scenic banks of the Clackamas River, this campground is a favorite for those seeking a tranquil retreat surrounded by towering Douglas firs and hemlocks. It serves as an accessible gateway for travelers looking to disconnect from the bustle of modern life and immerse themselves in the lush forest landscape of Oregon.

Location & Surroundings

Located just southeast of Estacada, Oregon, the park is easily reached via the Highway 224 corridor. The surrounding area is defined by the dramatic Clackamas River canyon, where the water flows clearly over volcanic rock. Visitors will find themselves nestled in an old-growth canopy that provides plenty of shade and a sense of privacy. The natural soundscape of the rushing river and wind through the trees creates a soothing environment that is quintessential to the region.

Amenities & Park Features

As a primitive forest service site, Lazy Bend focuses on a rustic experience. The campground features paved parking spurs suitable for smaller RVs and trailers, though it is important to note there are no hookups available. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a campfire ring for evening gatherings. On-site facilities include vault toilets and potable water, ensuring basic comforts are met while maintaining the rugged charm of a woodland stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activity here. The Clackamas River is a premier destination for whitewater rafting, kayaking, and trout fishing. Hikers can explore the nearby Riverside Trail or venture further into the Mt. Hood National Forest for more challenging terrain. For a change of pace, the nearby Promontory Park offers additional recreation opportunities, while the town of Estacada provides local shops and services just a short drive away.

Who This Park Is Best For

Lazy Bend is ideal for RVers who prioritize natural beauty over luxury amenities. It is perfectly suited for those with smaller rigs or van lifers who enjoy dry camping in a spectacular setting. It was a good stay. I stayed in spot 16 and it was spacious!! A little walk from the parking spot to the site but wasn’t too terrible. Loved the location.

Friendly camp host and some sites have easy river access. Not the best sites for hammock camping.

I went to check this campground out yesterday. My dog and I parked and walked into an empty campsite then took the trail from that site towards the river. I was pushing a branch out of my way when I realized it was poison oak. Then I realized that the trail was overgrown with poison oak. I looked around and saw poison oak growing in many places throughout the campsites!!! This campground has a camp host. Why aren't they clearing the trails at least of the poison oak? There wasn't even a posted warning on the drive in. They charge per night here, wow. Camping isn't fun when you get poison oak. I washed myself and my dog from head to toe with dawn dish soap and so far I don't have any symptoms. I won't be staying there ever.
