New Brighton State Beach
Overview
New Brighton State Beach offers a serene coastal escape on the northern edge of Monterey Bay. This 93-acre park is widely celebrated for its dramatic coastal bluffs and a lush, fragrant forest of Monterey pine and eucalyptus trees. It successfully bridges the gap between a rugged, natural coastal experience and a convenient suburban retreat, providing a peaceful atmosphere where the steady rhythm of the Pacific surf becomes a constant companion throughout your stay.
Location & Surroundings
Perched directly above the shoreline in the picturesque town of Capitola, California, the park provides stunning panoramic views of the sweeping Monterey Bay. The surrounding landscape transitions beautifully from the quiet, shaded campsites in the upland forest to the wide, sandy shores reachable by a paved path. Because of its elevated bluff position, visitors enjoy a unique vantage point for spotting marine life and easy access to the iconic, colorful waterfront of Capitola Village.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground is designed to accommodate various RV lengths and offers a selection of both developed and primitive sites. While many spots are dedicated to dry camping, the park includes sites with electric hookups for travelers who require consistent power. On-site facilities are reliable, featuring clean restrooms, coin-operated showers, and a centrally located dump station with potable water. Spacious picnic areas and well-maintained fire rings make it easy to enjoy traditional outdoor evenings nestled under the dense tree canopy.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Beyond the immediate shoreline, the surrounding region is packed with classic California activities. Guests can take a very short drive to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk for historic seaside thrills or spend an afternoon exploring the boutique shops and riverside dining in downtown Capitola. Within the park boundaries, the Pacific Migration Visitor Center serves as a highlight, offering fascinating educational exhibits on the local ecosystem and the monarch butterflies that frequently overwinter in the area.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is an exceptional match for nature-focused RVers who prefer the authentic feel of a state park over a highly developed commercial resort. It is a fantastic choice for families seeking safe beach access and travelers who desire a tranquil coastal basecamp for exploring the Central Coast. If you prioritize spectacular sunset views and a forested coastal ambiance over luxury amenities like swimming pools, this park will perfectly fit your travel style.

Nice campground with decent sized campsites. On the bluff overlooking the bay. Good views. Easy downhill access to beach or you can drive to a closer lot. Fairly small beach between the cliff face to the west and development to the east. Had nice sunsets.

this is a beautiful Beach located in mid county. it is a state park and requires an entrance fee. however, there are trails leading to the beach. it's a nice walk at low tide to capitola village and you can also walk south to Rio del Mar

Beautiful beach for spending one of the summer days. The beach is clean. Be aware of the water level at high tide when setting up the mat or beach tent. The beach offers a long walk and at least one hike nearby. The public toilets were well maintained. There is an entry and parking fee of $10. It has parking space for about 40 cars. In case, the parking is full, you may try the adjacent beaches.

Nice beach. Saw whales, seals, pelicans, sea gulls, and crabs. Nice sand and dogs allowed on leash. If you bring a cooler with wheels or a wagon, a ramp to the beach is at the far end of the beach by the bathrooms. Nice family friendly spot.

It was a great experience camping at New Brighton State Beach. The campsite was quiet, clean, and well-maintained. The beach was just a short walk away, and the faucet even had hot water, which was a nice surprise. Both my baby and my dog had a wonderful time. A perfect spot for a relaxing family getaway!
