New Glarus Woods

Overview

New Glarus Woods State Park offers a peaceful, nature-centric retreat nestled in the rolling hills of southern Wisconsin. This 435-acre park provides a scenic backdrop for RVers who prefer a more rustic and quiet environment compared to busy commercial resorts. It serves as a preserved island of forest and prairie, offering a serene atmosphere that feels miles away from the hustle of daily life while remaining remarkably close to local conveniences and cultural landmarks.

Location & Surroundings

Located just one mile south of the charming village of New Glarus, this park sits in the heart of Green County. The landscape is characterized by lush hardwood forests and small pockets of restored prairie. One of the park's most significant features is its direct access to the Sugar River State Trail via a dedicated spur trail, making it a prime location for those who enjoy exploring the gentle Wisconsin countryside on foot or by bicycle.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground at New Glarus Woods is designed for a traditional outdoor experience. It features electric and non-electric sites suitable for RVs, though operators of larger rigs should verify specific site dimensions during the reservation process. Each site includes a fire ring and a picnic table for outdoor dining. On-site facilities include vault toilets, drinking water, and a modern shower building available during the primary camping season, along with several miles of internal hiking trails.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The park is a very short drive or bike ride from the village of New Glarus, famously known as America's Little Switzerland. Visitors can explore unique Swiss architecture, authentic bakeries, and the world-renowned New Glarus Brewing Company. For outdoor enthusiasts, the 24-mile Sugar River State Trail offers level terrain for cycling through picturesque bridges and farmland, while the village itself hosts numerous cultural festivals and heritage museums throughout the year.

Who This Park Is Best For

This state park is ideal for active RV travelers and cyclists who want to combine outdoor recreation with cultural exploration. It is a fantastic choice for those seeking a quiet, wooded environment rather than a high-traffic resort with swimming pools or planned entertainment. If your travel style involves hiking, biking, and sampling local craft beer and cheese in a quaint European-style village, this park provides the perfect base camp for your journey.

Great place wooded camping spots. Trails to walk right at the park. Fire wood for sale. Dog friendly.

Possibly the most "park" state park with its large central open area, numerous picnic tables and grills, and very well made playground. While other state parks offer waterfalls or scenic views or historical buildings or huge rock formations, this one seems much more focused on just being a relaxing place to enjoy. The animal facts signs and imprints in the sidewalk are a very nice touch. They really give it that extra special something! The trail system here is very nice, as well. We had a lot to fit in while down in this area, so we didn't get to do as much hiking as we would have liked, but still spent over an hour while barely scratching the surface of what is offered here. Peaceful and serene, well worth visiting. We'll have to stop back again someday to hike the entirety of it.

Very private sites with tons of vegetation between sites. We parked a 22 foot RV in a site and it fit adequately with room for a small Clam at the back. Not very level lots and not all work for an RV so check the site pictures before registering. Quiet and rustic. Very nice.

Beautiful spot. It would be deluxe if there was water and electric. Thankfully, we have our own toilet and shower, but wish there was at least a fill spigot for our water tank!

Nice campground, very peaceful this time of year. Some good hiking trails with wonderful fall views. I was a little disappointed to find burnt and unburnt trash in my campsites fire pit when I arrived, always people like this ruining good things for the rest of us.
