Northland Outfitters

Overview

Northland Outfitters serves as a quintessential basecamp for exploring Michigan's rugged Upper Peninsula. Located directly on the banks of the Manistique River, this park offers a rustic yet comfortable environment for travelers seeking an authentic outdoor experience. It is not a high-speed luxury resort but rather a peaceful destination where the focus remains on disconnecting and immersing yourself in the natural beauty of the north woods.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated in Germfask, a small community that serves as a vital gateway to the Seney National Wildlife Refuge. Its prime location along the water makes it a hub for river-based activities and wildlife observation. The surrounding landscape is characterized by dense forests and winding waterways, providing a serene backdrop that feels worlds away from the hustle of urban life while remaining accessible via major regional routes.

Amenities & Park Features

Guests have access to essential conveniences including riverside RV sites with electric hookups and clean bathhouse facilities. One of the standout features is the extensive on-site rental fleet, offering canoes, kayaks, and bicycles for exploring the river and nearby trails. The park also provides a convenient dump station, a camp store for essentials, and campfire rings at every site to ensure a classic camping experience for all visitors.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate being minutes away from the Seney National Wildlife Refuge, which is world-renowned for birdwatching and scenic drives. A short day trip from the park leads to the stunning Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore or the massive Tahquamenon Falls. Fishing and paddling on the Manistique River are the most popular daily activities, with the river's gentle current making it accessible for all skill levels.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for active paddlers and photographers who want direct access to water and diverse wildlife. It is particularly well-suited for families and solo travelers looking for a rustic basecamp while exploring the central Upper Peninsula. My wife and I recently rented a kayak at Northland Outfitters. We found the staff there exceedingly friendly and helpful. They know the best stretches of river to explore, including spot-on tips reflecting current conditions of weather and flow. Their equipment is well maintained, their prices more than reasonable, and the owners are wonderfully flexible in their scheduling, even opening early to accommodate our travel schedule. Viewing Benny the Beardfisher was a delightful bonus!

We love it here! We have been visited mtg for 3 years and staying in the cabins for the last 2. The property, cabins, and bathrooms are always very clean and you can tell are well cared for. The setting is very scenic. The owners are on the premises and super sweet people. They have put a lot of love into this place. This year we finally did a float down the river through their livery and it was probably the best part of our trip. 20/10 we will be back!

This place is amazing on every level! The campground is the perfect combination of smaller and spacious. Amazing views on the river! We stayed in one of the cabins. Rustic charm with "brand new" cleanliness and modern amenities. The ownership and staff go above and beyond. When part of our camping group left with some of our cooking gear, the owners loaned us their own pan so we could cook our food. They and the staff are extremely courteous, always welcoming, and readily available. We also booked a kayak trip which absolutely beautiful, relaxing, and very convenient. The end point is right back at the campground. And don't forget to see Benny! Unbelievable one of a kind GIANT natural piece of art commissioned with a world renowned artist. Northland Outfitters Campground is officially one of our go-to destinations when we travel to the UP for years to come! Thanks for a wonderful vacation!

Long overdue! We stayed two nights about 3 weeks ago and had such an incredible experience. The owners and staff are so dedicated and passionate about the campground and every detail that comes with it. They truly treat you so well and will do anything to make your stay an enjoyable one. Laid back, quiet, private and clean (bathhouses included!) We stayed two nights in the P4 cabin — super cozy, clean and nice! The general store is awesome with plenty of essentials, local art and swag! We kayaked the Ten Curves route on the Manistique River and had so much fun (even when I got thrown from my kayak! Watch out for those trees and logs under the surface!) Don’t forget to say hi to Benny the Beard Fisher — so cool! We would recommend this place to anyone and we will definitely be back. Such a great time and we were treated so well! Katie & Ryan — happy campers — June 2025!
