NRA Whittington Center Campgrounds

Overview

The NRA Whittington Center Campgrounds offer a unique high-desert escape just outside of Raton, New Mexico. Spanning over 33,000 acres, this destination is globally recognized as one of the premier shooting sports facilities, yet it provides a serene landscape for traditional RV travelers. Whether you are visiting for a specific competition or seeking a quiet spot along the Santa Fe Trail, the center provides a sense of seclusion and rugged beauty rarely found in standard roadside parks.

Location & Surroundings

Nestled at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the park sits at an elevation that provides cool nights and panoramic views of the New Mexico landscape. The property is a sanctuary for local wildlife, where it is common to spot elk, mule deer, and pronghorn grazing near the campsites. The rugged terrain and pinon-juniper forests create an authentic Western atmosphere, offering a deep connection to the natural environment of the Colfax County region.

Amenities & Park Features

The center provides various camping options, ranging from primitive sites to the Van Sikle Campground which features full hookups for larger rigs. Guests have access to essential facilities to ensure a comfortable stay:

  • Access to clean bathhouses and laundry facilities for convenience.
  • A world-class museum and library located on-site.
  • Dedicated dump stations and potable water access.

The infrastructure is designed to accommodate both individual travelers and large groups participating in outdoor educational programs or sporting events throughout the year.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

While the on-site shooting ranges are the primary draw, the surrounding area offers diverse exploration opportunities. Travelers can visit the Capulin Volcano National Monument to hike around an extinct cinder cone or enjoy the fishing and hiking trails at Sugarite Canyon State Park. The historic town of Raton is just a short drive away, featuring classic architecture and local diners that highlight the region's rich history as a gateway for the Santa Fe Trail.

Pretty awesome place. My son had a great time shooting clays. Staff was super friendly and helpful. The museum was very interesting and the gift shop had a nice collection of souvenirs.

Beautiful location and views. Clean restrooms. It was cool to look out and see the deer wondering around our 5th Wheel. The mosquitoes were the only negative but the OFF kept them away.

We stopped to view the museum. World class gun collection. Outstanding displays! Very friendly and informative staff. Definitely a worthwhile stop south of Raton. We didn’t stay overnight but they said they have nice accommodations.

An incredible facility. Beautiful ranges, a wide variety of lodges and cabins – to include competitor dormitories. The roads and grounds are incredibly clean and well taken care of. I can’t believe I have not been here before to take advantage of the Whittington center. The staff was very polite and helpful.
