O'Neill Regional Park

Overview

O’Neill Regional Park encompasses over 4,500 acres of scenic canyons and woodlands in Trabuco Canyon. It offers a wooded wilderness experience that feels worlds away from the urban sprawl of Southern California. RVers come here to enjoy the shade of ancient coast live oaks and sycamores while exploring the rugged beauty of the Santa Ana Mountains. It is a quintessential destination for those seeking a nature-focused retreat with easy access to regional amenities.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the eastern portion of Orange County, the park is tucked into Trabuco and Tijeras Canyons. The landscape is defined by rolling hills, seasonal creek beds, and high ridgelines that offer panoramic views. Because it is bordered by the Cleveland National Forest, the park serves as a critical habitat for local wildlife, making it a peaceful sanctuary. The native plant life, including prickly pear cactus and coastal sage scrub, provides a unique aesthetic typical of the Southern California foothills.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground provides a classic camping environment with sites that can accommodate RVs up to 40 feet in length. While there are no hookups available at the individual sites, the park offers a convenient dump station and fresh water fill-up for self-contained rigs. Guests have access to the following features:

  • Modern restrooms and hot showers for visitor comfort.
  • Individual fire rings and sturdy picnic tables at every site.
  • A designated equestrian camping area for those traveling with horses.
  • Large turf areas and playgrounds perfect for families.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find over 23 miles of multi-use trails perfect for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. For a touch of history, the Mission San Juan Capistrano is just a short drive away, offering beautiful architecture and gardens. Those looking for more civilization can visit the nearby shops in Rancho Santa Margarita or take a scenic drive through the winding canyon roads to explore the local artisan community and rustic eateries.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who prefer a natural setting over a high-density luxury resort. It is a top choice for mountain bikers and hikers who want immediate trail access from their campsite. Families and groups looking for a rustic weekend getaway near Orange County will find O'Neill Regional Park to be an accessible and refreshing escape that prioritizes the outdoor experience over digital connectivity.

We camped here 3 days/ 2 nights. Had a huge pull through site that was level and shaded. Water on our site was easy but no electricity. Hikes were easy to access but no dogs on the trails except the 2 trails. So limited dog friendly trails. We enjoyed the location and rangers were nice.

Wonderful place to camp! Clean site, clean bathrooms with showers, awesome Rangers, good amount of trees and open skies, and very stable concrete benches. Very nice spot close enough and far enough from the city life.

I had not been here for a couple of years. The campground, bathrooms and the showers were clean and well maintained. There seemed to be quite a few people that were temporarily living there out of necessity. The campground was almost completely full every night and empty in the morning. For the most part it was completely quiet at night except for the sound of people coming in late and pitching tents or getting their cars ready to sleep in. I wouldn't suggest leaving your belongings unattended for to long though.

Nice regional park. There is a funny homeless man who sits at the back of the park and yells funny stories. You have to check him out if you are there. I do not like how they added conststion cones in the trail to watch out for obvious low hanging branch. It takes away from the ambience.

One of my favorite local regional parks, bathrooms and showers if you need them. Lots of trails to explore, very kid friendly. And if you don’t want to cook your own meals there are plenty of options close by in Rancho Santa Margarita.
