Oakzanita Springs RV Campground

Overview

Oakzanita Springs RV Campground offers a tranquil mountain escape in the heart of San Diego County. Situated at an elevation of roughly 4,000 feet, this park provides a refreshing, cooler alternative to the coastal heat. The campground is defined by its expansive oak groves and peaceful mountain atmosphere, making it a premier choice for travelers seeking a rustic getaway that still provides the security of a gated community.

Location & Surroundings

Located in the picturesque community of Descanso, CA, the park is nestled deep within the Cuyamaca Mountains. The surrounding landscape is a beautiful tapestry of rolling hills, dramatic granite boulders, and dense canopies of ancient oak trees that provide ample shade. Because the park is tucked away from the noise of major interstates, visitors can enjoy a truly quiet environment where the evening stars are bright and the local wildlife is frequently spotted.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is equipped with a range of facilities designed to make your mountain stay comfortable. Guests can choose from various sites, many featuring full-hookup connections for easy setup. Common features available to guests include:

  • A refreshing seasonal swimming pool and spacious sundeck.
  • A community clubhouse that serves as a hub for social events.
  • A miniature golf course and a dedicated playground for families.

Additionally, the park provides essential pet-friendly areas and well-maintained laundry facilities, ensuring that long-term travelers have everything they need for a successful stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure is never far away when staying in Descanso. The adjacent Cuyamaca Rancho State Park is a haven for hikers, offering over 100 miles of trails through meadows and pine forests. Travelers often take the short, scenic drive to the historic town of Julian to enjoy world-famous apple pie and local cider. For a change of pace, the shimmering waters of Lake Cuyamaca provide a perfect spot for trout fishing or birding in a serene alpine setting.

Who This Park Is Best For

The staff were the warmest and welcoming of any thousand trails we’ve stayed at. They truly made the visit 5 stars. We had an issue with a “troublesome” camper that apparently had been causing trouble in other ways as well and the staff went out of their way to find us a spot that better suited our needs.

Great campground in the mountains east of San Diego. Lots of recreation, great hiking trail and close to great restaurant at the junction in descanso.

One of the best investments we have ever made has been an annual camping pass to Thousand Trails, and this park is BY FAR our favorite! The staff is always warm and friendly, extremely helpful, the facilities are wonderful, we love the pool and hot tub (you’ll likely be the only ones using it!) and the nature, animals and views are just spectacular. It’s a birder’s paradise! Thank you especially to Michelle and Ginger for always being super awesome hosts. Love you guys!!

Pros: So fun! I love that they have free crafts and games for kids and families and cheapish ice cream socials. Beautiful trees all around. All the employees are kind and helpful! Cons: most of the grass is dead, there are no more dinosaur bones for kids to dig up (other vistors probably stole them and ruined the fun for others), the ANTS are Terrible!!! They are everywhere! They have invaded the pool area. People in the pool or sitting at the pool get bit all the time!! The tent sites are full of ants too

Love the place. We have a smaller trailer so fitting in was easy. Location is not too far from some attractions and basics. Indian casino in Alpine off highway 8 is beautiful and same city for Amazon locker pickup. Cool trails on the property, pool and small clubhouse for internet. Dog loved it w so many places to walk. Staff are very nice and helpful. Picture is sitting area outside clubhouse.
