Oasis

Overview

Oasis State Park serves as a peaceful sanctuary set against the backdrop of the high plains in Eastern New Mexico. Known for its unique sand dunes and cooling cottonwood trees, this park offers a refreshing change of pace for travelers navigating the surrounding prairies. It provides a well-maintained environment where visitors can enjoy the outdoors while having access to essential modern conveniences in a serene, natural setting. Whether you are passing through on a cross-country trip or planning a weekend retreat, the park invites you to slow down and enjoy the quiet.

Location & Surroundings

Located roughly ten miles north of Portales, the park is situated within a landscape characterized by shifting sand dunes and a small, sparkling lake. The contrast between the arid high plains and the lush vegetation around the water creates a distinctive atmosphere. Travelers will find themselves surrounded by quiet vistas, with the scenic cottonwood groves providing ample shade during the warmer New Mexico afternoons. The area is well-known for its desert-like hills that offer a playground for both photographers and hikers alike.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features several sites equipped with electric and water hookups, making it a comfortable choice for modern RVers. Many sites are large enough to accommodate various rig sizes, and the well-spaced layout ensures a degree of privacy. Key features include:

  • Clean restrooms and hot showers for all guests.
  • A convenient dump station located near the park exit.
  • Individual covered picnic tables and fire rings at each site.

The small lake on-site is frequently stocked, providing a reliable spot for casual fishing throughout the season. The facilities are designed to support a self-contained camping experience while keeping you close to the beauty of the desert.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the terrain via several hiking trails that wind through the dunes and around the shoreline. Fishing for trout and catfish is a popular pastime at the lake. Just a short drive away, history buffs can visit the Blackwater Draw Museum to learn about ancient regional history. Birdwatching is another highlight, as the water attracts various species rarely seen elsewhere in this arid region. The proximity to Portales also allows for easy access to local dining and the Eastern New Mexico University campus.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for nature lovers and birdwatchers who appreciate a quiet, less crowded camping experience. It is a fantastic choice for families looking to explore the sand dunes or teach children how to fish in a safe, controlled environment. Additionally, it serves as an excellent peaceful stopover for long-distance travelers seeking a safe and scenic alternative to traditional roadside RV parks near the highway. If you value dark night skies and the sound of wind through the trees over city lights, this is the perfect spot for you.

I went here to hike through the park. I walked the main path twice and then did the 2.5 mile trail. It was nothing special to see, just lots of dead plants, birds, a lizard, a man made pond, and signs for Rattlesnakes. If this is an Oasis, they left a lot to be desired. On a positive note they did have plenty of bathrooms and it was incredibly quiet and peaceful. That was a plus in my book. Overall it was ok to see once but there was nothing there that would draw me back to visit again.

Quiet and relaxing place. There's not much there except for sandhills, rattlesnakes, and an artisan spring. There is a selection of shaded sites with nice tall trees. 4 out of 5, because it's a much needed retreat if you're local. There is so little to do for hundreds of miles.

Awesome lake, we had the whole place to ourselves. Alot of bluegill, but nothing else. Alot of flies. Love it!

Just a nice quiet well maintained area for some fishing and recreation. Very enjoyable and relaxing atmosphere. Just wish the weeds were not as prevalent in the water. Makes fishing less enjoyable. Otherwise a lovely time.
