Ocala/Lake Dorr

Overview

Lake Dorr Recreation Area offers a serene escape within the southern boundaries of the Ocala National Forest. Located near Umatilla, Florida, this park is defined by its massive 1,760-acre lake and a landscape rich with towering pines and majestic live oaks. It provides an authentic Florida wilderness experience that contrasts sharply with the state’s busier coastal resorts, making it a peaceful sanctuary for those who want to disconnect and enjoy the outdoors.

Location & Surroundings

The park sits right on the eastern shores of Lake Dorr, providing visitors with immediate access to one of the region’s most beautiful freshwater bodies. The surrounding environment is a lush blend of pine flatwoods and oak hammocks, typical of the Central Florida highlands. Its position near Umatilla makes it an accessible gateway for those looking to explore the deeper reaches of the national forest while remaining within a reasonable driving distance of local grocery stores and conveniences.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a destination for those who appreciate a rustic, natural setting over a paved resort. Key features include a concrete boat ramp and a dedicated fishing pier, making it a favorite for water-based recreation. While the park emphasizes a back-to-nature vibe, it provides essential facilities such as picnic tables, fire rings, and accessible restrooms. Many sites are shaded by a thick natural canopy, offering a cool retreat from the Florida sun and providing a sense of privacy between neighbors.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do, from largemouth bass fishing on the lake to exploring nearby emerald springs. The famous Alexander Springs Recreation Area is just a short drive away, offering crystal-clear waters for swimming, snorkeling, and canoeing. Additionally, the area serves as an excellent base for hikers wanting to access sections of the Florida National Scenic Trail, which winds through the diverse and ancient ecosystems of the forest.

Who This Park Is Best For

A Life Time Of Memories

For a state park this one is not taken care of properly. This is a place that you're supposed to be able to bring your camper and the potholes are endless, as soon as you pull in you will see big potholes and the trees are not trimmed so be careful if you're bringing your camper to this site. It was late afternoon when I checked the place out and it looks like a bear or something must have gotten into the garbage but it was not cleaned up and that was at the Park area.

Nice place to cook out. It's peaceful because there are very few people here. The only downside is the restrooms are locked

This campsite was beautiful! It was clean and calm, the people were very respectful, and the showers had warm water—so don’t hesitate to take showers every day while you’re there! The only reason I’m not giving it five stars is due to two main factors: First, there’s not much to do—there’s no dock for fishing, no trail, and no designated swimming area. Second, I strongly advise against bringing your pets. Despite using preventative measures, my dog came back covered in a ridiculous number of ticks. I understand that this is always a risk when camping with pets, but I’ve visited several campsites across different states, and this was the first time I encountered such a high volume. (Nothing they can do about this, just be advised.) Other than that, the campsite is incredibly beautiful and peaceful. 🤍

Well kept up campground with a laid back vibe. Site 12 included fire ring, picnic table, grill, tent plateau, and potable water. A few other campers were on the campground but didn’t hear a peep from anyone. My only complaint is that it’s next to a trailer park. You’ll hear dogs barking occasionally and I was woken up by a rooster at 3:30am. Sunrise view over lake dorr was nice too.
