Ouabache
Overview
Ouabache State Park, pronounced "Wabash," serves as a premier outdoor destination located along the scenic banks of the Wabash River. Originally established as a game preserve, this state park has evolved into a beloved recreational hub that honors its natural history. Visitors are often struck by the serene woodland environment and the unique blend of wildlife and historical structures that define the landscape. It offers a classic Indiana state park experience with a focus on preservation and community enjoyment.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just east of Bluffton, Indiana, the park is nestled within a lush region dominated by the Wabash River and the peaceful Koutz Lake. The surrounding area is characterized by flat farmlands that give way to the park’s dense canopy and rolling terrain near the water. This transition makes the park feel like a hidden oasis. The scenic river views provide a perfect backdrop for quiet reflection or morning walks, connecting travelers to the heart of the Midwest's natural beauty.
Amenities & Park Features
The park is well-equipped for RV travelers, offering sites with electrical hookups and modern comfort stations. One of the most distinctive features is the American Bison exhibit, where a small herd resides within a fenced pasture. For those seeking activity, the park boasts an Olympic-sized swimming pool with a diving well and a towering fire tower that provides a panoramic view of the Wells County countryside. Paved trails and playgrounds ensure there is something for every age group.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Beyond the campsites, the Wabash River Defenders Trail provides an excellent opportunity for hiking and wildlife observation. Cyclists can enjoy the paved Ouabache Greenway, which connects the park to the city of Bluffton. Travelers often enjoy these activities:
- Climbing the 100-foot fire tower for panoramic views.
- Boating or fishing on the calm waters of Koutz Lake.
- Walking the perimeter trails to see the resident bison herd.
Those looking for local culture can venture into downtown Bluffton to explore local shops and eateries just a short drive from the park entrance.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for family-oriented RVers who appreciate a mix of structured activities and wild nature. The presence of the bison and the fire tower makes it a hit with children and photography enthusiasts alike. It is also a perfect match for active retirees and cyclists looking for well-maintained trails and a peaceful atmosphere. If you enjoy a park that feels grounded in local history while offering modern recreational facilities, Ouabache is an excellent choice for your next Indiana stopover.

As always, the DNR staff was very helpful and kind, giving accurate directions and info. Completed the CCC Challenge on a rainy day - didn't see any other hikers on the trails but school children joined the fun after the rain ceased. A very pleasant park with a variety of amenities that will be fun to visit again in the future!

This is a park I didn't know about until recently. Lots of bike trails. Bison 🦬 to look at, 100 foot tall fire tower, lake, and campground. No camp store but the camp host sells firewood and ice. I plan on going back. My grandson and I had a good time with lots of things to do.

Nice, smaller park. Lake has lots of moss and algae or something, but lots of people were fishing. The American Bison herd and campground are the main attractions, otherwise, not much to it. Bison laid down the entire time we were there.

Very nice state park. We stayed at the campground during the week and it was very quiet and maintained. Park itself is really nice and mostly wooded with a small pond to swim in, a small bison preserve and a fire tower that you can climb up and overlook the area.

Thus a lovely park to visit. The bison exhibit is really fun to walk around and see, and the firepower is awesome! I'm so happy they renovated/reopened it. There's camping, and some good fishing spots. Its close to the rivergreenway too, which I love!
