Ozark Scenic Riverway/Big Spring

Overview

The Big Spring area within the Ozark National Scenic Riverways offers a unique blend of natural wonder and historic charm. Located near the banks of the Current River, this destination centers around one of the largest freshwater springs in the world. Visitors are often captivated by the striking turquoise hue of the water and the sheer volume of flow emerging from the base of the limestone bluffs. This is not just a campsite; it is an immersion into a nationally protected river system that prioritizes conservation and outdoor recreation in the heart of Missouri.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just south of Van Buren, MO, the park is nestled within the rugged beauty of the Ozark Mountains. The surrounding landscape is defined by dense hardwood forests and dramatic karst topography. The proximity to the Current River makes it a prime location for those who enjoy water-based activities. The area feels secluded and peaceful, yet it remains easily accessible for RVers traveling through the southern Missouri region. The towering bluffs and shaded valleys provide a cool, refreshing environment even during the peak of summer.

Amenities & Park Features

The Big Spring Campground provides a variety of sites, including several that offer electric hookups suitable for modern RVs. While the setting is rustic, the park provides essential comforts such as paved parking pads, fire rings, and picnic tables. Restrooms and seasonal shower facilities are available to guests, ensuring a comfortable stay in the wilderness. Much of the infrastructure reflects the craftsmanship of the Civilian Conservation Corps, giving the park a distinct historical character. There are also designated areas for group gatherings and easy access to riverside picnic spots for day use.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is undoubtedly the Big Spring itself, where millions of gallons of water surge daily from the earth. Beyond the spring, travelers can enjoy world-class floating, tubing, and kayaking on the crystal-clear Current River. Hikers can explore the Slough Trail or the Big Spring Branch Trail to see diverse local flora and fauna. History enthusiasts will appreciate the historic CCC buildings and the old lodge area. For those looking to explore further, the nearby town of Van Buren offers local dining and supply shops to stock up for your journey.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for travelers who prefer a scenic, nature-focused experience over a high-density commercial resort. It is a perfect fit for families looking to introduce their children to the outdoors and for photographers seeking to capture the Ozarks' natural beauty. RVers who appreciate historic landmarks and quiet evenings by the river will find this location particularly rewarding. If your travel style involves hiking, paddling, and disconnecting from the digital world to enjoy the sounds of water and wind, Big Spring is a must-visit destination.

Absolutely gorgeous! The park is beautiful too. There is a path around the spring with benches along the way. Picnic tables, grills and bathrooms with water.

This is a gorgeous place to go for a walk or to picnic beside the spring. The water is so blue and clear, the path around it opens into miniature caves, and the trail in general brings you through beautiful vegetation that catches the sun in a stunning way. We didn't do any of the additional trails, but if you are interested in seeing the springs, you should definitely stop by. If you live a decent distance away, I suggest looking up some other things to do in the area, too. Unlike something like Johnson's Shuttins, this is not an all-day adventure.

We stopped by last minute on our way through and we were not disappointed. The water is so blue the pics don't do it justice. The cool breeze coming off the water felt really nice in the summer heat. Definitely worth the stop!

We are traveling back to the east coast. As I was looking on Google maps at places to stop through Missouri, I found this place. Absolutely gorgeous is all I can say. The water was easly high 40's low 50's degrees as it is pushed up through the spring so on a hot summer day as the wind pushes over the water its Like a natural air conditioning. The water is very clear and the whole park is very scenic. We were so happy that we stopped here and would absolutely advise anyone passing through to stop and go see it. You will most definitely wish you had. Park service does a great job keeping the area mowed, and hiking trails are upkept.

If the beaten path, but it’s well worth getting out and walking around and stretching while listening to the water rushing.
