Patapsco Valley/Hollofield Area
Overview
Patapsco Valley State Park, specifically the Hollofield Area, offers a serene escape into Maryland’s natural beauty while remaining conveniently close to major urban centers. As part of Maryland's first state park, this area is perched atop a ridge, providing sweeping views of the Patapsco River Valley. It serves as a lush, wooded retreat for travelers seeking a balance between outdoor exploration and accessibility to the historic charm of Ellicott City. The atmosphere is distinctly rustic, focusing on the sounds of the forest and the rhythmic flow of the river below.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in Ellicott City, Maryland, the Hollofield Area is defined by its dramatic topography and dense forest canopy. The park is easily accessible from major highways like Interstate 70, making it a straightforward stop for those traveling the Mid-Atlantic corridor. Despite its proximity to the city, the surrounding landscape feels remarkably secluded. The Hollofield Overlook is a centerpiece of the location, offering one of the most celebrated vistas in the region, showcasing the winding river and the dense hardwood forests that change vibrantly with the seasons.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground provides a traditional state park experience with several modern conveniences. RVers will find sites equipped with 30-amp electric hookups, though water and sewer are not available at individual pads. A centrally located dump station and fresh water fill are provided for convenience. The park features well-maintained bathhouses with hot showers and flushing toilets. Each site typically includes a fire ring and picnic table, allowing guests to enjoy the classic camping experience under the shade of mature trees.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the direct access to the Old Post Road Trail, which winds through the woods and offers varying levels of difficulty. For those interested in local history and shopping, the Historic Ellicott City district is just minutes away, featuring unique boutiques and dining in a 19th-century setting. The park’s location also makes it an excellent base camp for day trips to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor or the monuments of Washington D.C., both of which are within a reasonable driving distance for a full day of sightseeing.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for nature-loving RVers who prefer a quiet, wooded environment over the crowded atmosphere of a commercial resort. It is a perfect fit for weekend warriors from the Baltimore-Washington metro area or long-distance travelers needing a peaceful pitstop. Because of the hilly terrain and specific site lengths, it is particularly well-suited for mid-sized RVs and trailers. Families and hikers will find the immediate access to trails and scenic overlooks provides plenty of engagement without ever needing to leave the park boundaries.

Beautiful park for hiking! I loved the rope bridge and nearby mini waterfall.

We visited the Hollofield Area of Patapsco Valley State Park and loved it! The hiking trails are scenic and well-marked, perfect for a family walk or a peaceful solo hike. There’s a beautiful river running through where you can dip your feet or cool off on a hot day—great for summer! We also came across a small waterfall, which added to the charm. Overall, a relaxing and refreshing nature escape just a short drive away. Tip: The park fills up early on weekends and summer days, and once the parking lot is full, they close the entrance. To avoid missing out, it’s best to arrive before 10 AM to get a good spot.

Play ground is very nice and park rangers were friendly. Two dollars to enter the park. To get to the river there is a long steep trail down that requires a level of fitness. I was able to go there with my two girls under 2 but def not stroller friendly. The river is beautiful and the bridge is pretty.

A really amazing place to check out that I just happen to randomly find. My best friends & I went to see Poe's grave & then see a friend in Frederick after. We wanted to find a place to have lunch & boy did we find a place. Looks like there's a few areas to the overall park. The view is amazing & there is a trail down to the river. There was a fee of $4, which is totally worth it. They also offer campsites. There is a playground that is a decent size for the kids.

Great place to hike but very rocky. Make sure you wear good shoes. 3 hiking trails we went to the first one 0.5 miles.
