Picacho SRA

Overview

Picacho State Recreation Area offers a unique, off-the-beaten-path experience along the lower Colorado River. Once a bustling gold mining town that supported thousands of residents, this remote destination now serves as a serene haven for those seeking solitude amidst dramatic desert scenery. Visitors can explore the remnants of the area's rich mining history while enjoying the natural beauty of the Sonoran Desert and the rugged volcanic terrain that defines this unique California state park.

Location & Surroundings

Situated approximately 24 miles north of Winterhaven, the journey to the park involves a trek along a graded dirt road, which sets the tone for its secluded and primitive atmosphere. The landscape is characterized by the striking silhouette of Picacho Peak and the lush riparian corridor of the river. It is an environment where the stark contrast between the arid desert hills and the flowing blue water creates a visually stunning backdrop for a rugged camping trip.

Amenities & Park Features

This park provides a primitive camping experience designed for self-contained travelers. The campground features over 50 campsites, though it is important to note there are no hookups for electricity or water at the individual sites. Basic facilities include chemical toilets and solar-heated showers, providing essential comforts for the backcountry adventurer. A functional boat launch provides easy access to the river, and several picnic areas are scattered throughout the park for day-use visitors.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water activities are the primary draw, with boating and kayaking on the Colorado River offering a cool respite from the desert heat. Anglers frequently visit to test their luck with bass and catfish in the river's backwaters. On land, various trails lead through volcanic rock formations where lucky observers might spot desert bighorn sheep or rare migratory birds. The historic stamp mill site provides a fascinating glimpse into the 1800s mining era that once dominated the region.

Who This Park Is Best For

Picacho SRA is ideal for adventurous RVers who prioritize raw nature and quiet solitude over modern resort luxuries. Because of the long dirt road access, it is best suited for those with high-clearance vehicles or sturdy trailers who are comfortable with dry camping and self-sufficiency. If you enjoy world-class stargazing, birdwatching, and escaping the digital world to reconnect with the desert wilderness, this hidden gem is the perfect fit for your travel style.

Quiet and serene desert landscape. It's a short adventure from Yuma Arizona.

Nice well maintained park. NOTE: no off-road vehicles allowed. Jeep’s and 4X4’s OK. Picacho road is a washboard most of the time. People drive motor homes and pull trailer’s on it. But I wouldn’t. So I only day use the park. You can also visit by boat. The old RR grade is a interesting trail. It’s narrow and on side cliffs. There is a few soft sand locations. We have had 2WD drive vehicles on the trail. Suggest that you don’t try it with 2WD pickup’s and high tire pressure. The River trail has interesting place’s. Bear Canyon; Loansoms Grave (bring a rock to place on the grave. 4S Camp. A nice place for lunch. Exiting the park via Indian Pass to Ogilby road adds to experience. Don’t try it if you are towing a trailer. If you are inexperienced and will driving a 2WD vehicle I suggest that you don’t try the route. If you are a hiker the trail to the old mill is recommended by my hiking friends.

I love it. When we were there only 4/54 campsites were in use. Very quiet, aside from burros screaming all night. The solar shower is amazing. Every camp needs one.

We loved it there And the workers we so helpful and extremely nice. I wasn't to crazy about the camp host. The drive in was stressful. Once I got there I wanted to stay longer than the 2 nights we stayed. I would love to be camp host and come up with ways to get more people to go there. It's totally beautiful and needs more support for the public.

This is a beautiful area, well worth the drive and the Ten Bucks admission fee. A four-wheel drive vehicle is recommended unless you want to get stuck in the sand. This is a desert landscape photographers dream come true. The shoreline camping, hiking and picnicking areas are beautiful. What a great place.
