Pictured Rocks Natl Lakeshore/Hurricane River
Overview
Hurricane River Campground serves as a premier destination for those seeking a primitive camping experience within the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Situated near the mouth of the Hurricane River where it flows into Lake Superior, this facility provides a serene environment for travelers to reconnect with nature. The campground is split into two distinct areas, the Upper and Lower loops, offering a total of 21 sites that prioritize the stunning natural landscape over modern development.
Location & Surroundings
Located west of Grand Marais and accessible from the scenic H-58 corridor near Seney, this campground is nestled in a dense forest of hardwoods and pines. The proximity to the Lake Superior shoreline is the defining feature of the area, providing campers with the constant sound of crashing waves. The surrounding terrain is characterized by sandy dunes, rocky beaches, and the winding river, making it one of the most picturesque stretches of the Upper Peninsula wilderness.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a strictly rustic facility designed for self-contained travelers. Guests should be prepared for a back-to-basics lifestyle, as there are no electric hookups or dump stations available on-site. The park provides essential features such as:
- Vault toilets located in both loops.
- Hand-pumped potable water stations for drinking and cooking.
- Individual picnic tables and fire rings for every site.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
One of the primary highlights of staying here is the direct access to the Au Sable Light Station, reachable via a scenic 1.5-mile walk from the campground. Hikers can also access the North Country National Scenic Trail, which winds through the park along the cliff edges. The beach is a popular spot for agate hunting and viewing the shipwrecks that occasionally emerge from the shifting sands of the Lake Superior coast during low tide.
Who This Park Is Best For
Hurricane River is ideal for the adventurous RVer who values solitude and immediate access to the outdoors. It is perfect for nature photographers and backpackers who want a basecamp for exploring the shoreline. Because of the limited turnaround space and lack of hookups, it is best suited for those in smaller motorhomes or camper vans who are fully equipped for dry camping in a peaceful, remote setting away from the crowds.

What an amazing place. I can not wait to go back. Got so lucky and scored site 10 for five nights the first week of October. Pack for all 4 seasons when you go because the weather is definitely ALL over the place. The first 2 days 85° and sunny. The next two days 50° and windier than I ever could have imagined. Last day. 65° and perfect. Even went in the water. Being from Wisconsin definitely helps. 😂 The beauty is magical.

Fun spot to stop and walk to the lighthouse from. Tons of great mushrooms to check out, I wish I had had a mushroom guide with me!

The beach is awesome, beautiful. It's Lake Superior. Hearing the crashing waves through the night. I would give 5 stars if this camp ground had modern bathrooms with running water and showers.

Great campground and sites. Clean and quiet and spacious. Not much cell service for us with Verizon but I’m good with that. This campground is reservation only on the recreation gov site and it fills up fast, there are only 10 sites available. Like I said, it’s very spacious, they could easily get a few more spots opened up and it would still be spacious.

Was a very nice camp ground. Bathrooms were clean. The only issue we had was our campsite was completely infested with termites site six on the lower loop. When we first arrived, they were just swarming and flying everywhere. Not a big deal just quite annoying. The beach is very nice. The hike to lighthouse is very nice except for the relentless flies but hey, what are you gonna do about flies? All in all it was very nice.
