Pike-San Isabel/Collegiate Peaks

Overview

Located within the heart of the Pike and San Isabel National Forests, the Collegiate Peaks area offers a quintessential Colorado mountain experience. This high-altitude destination sits at approximately 9,800 feet, providing a rustic forest setting for travelers seeking to escape the summer heat. It serves as a gateway to the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness, where the air is thin and the pace of life slows down significantly. Surrounded by towering evergreens and groves of aspen, the area provides a serene environment where the sound of the Middle Cottonwood Creek serves as a constant backdrop for your stay.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just 11 miles west of Buena Vista, Colorado, the park is positioned perfectly for exploring the Sawatch Range. The drive along Highway 306 toward Cottonwood Pass is stunning, offering access to some of the highest peaks in the state. The area is a transition zone between the arid valley floor and the high-alpine tundra, creating a diverse ecological landscape that changes beautifully with the seasons. The surrounding landscape is characterized by rugged alpine terrain and lush meadows, making it a prime spot for those who want to be immersed in the wilderness.

Amenities & Park Features

As a National Forest site, the focus here is on natural beauty rather than modern luxury. The campground features spacious back-in sites that accommodate various RV lengths, though visitors should note the lack of hookups. The layout is designed to maximize privacy between sites, using the dense forest cover to create individual sanctuaries. Essential amenities include:

  • Vault toilets maintained regularly
  • Potable water available during peak season
  • Fire rings and heavy-duty picnic tables at every site

These features ensure a comfortable dry camping experience for prepared travelers who bring their own power sources.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities. The nearby Denny Creek Trailhead provides access to challenging hikes leading into the high country and the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness. For a more relaxed afternoon, Cottonwood Lake is just a short drive away, offering excellent opportunities for fishing and non-motorized boating. Additionally, the famous hot springs in the valley provide a perfect way to soothe muscles after a long day of high-altitude exploration. The proximity to Buena Vista also allows for easy access to world-class whitewater rafting on the Arkansas River.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for self-contained RVers who prioritize scenery and solitude over resort-style amenities. If you enjoy dry camping and want immediate access to hiking trails and alpine views, this is the perfect basecamp. It is particularly well-suited for nature photographers and mountain adventurers looking to summit one of the many surrounding peaks. Families who enjoy traditional camping activities like roasting marshmallows and stargazing will find the quiet, dark skies here absolutely world-class.

Beautiful little overlook of the Collegiate Peaks and the valley below. Requires a CO state parks pass, which you can buy there at the entrance. Plenty of picnic tables and small post-in-ground bbq grills, each with their own single parking spot on the short dirt road loop.

I stop here to let my dog stretch his legs whenever I drive between the front range and the West slope. It's a great place to chill for a bit and enjoy the view of the collegiate peaks. No trash cans or flushing toilets. Remember to pack out trash and dog poop bags

Nice outlook with picnic tables and bathrooms. There's a fee or pass that is asked. Great place to watch the sunrise
