Pike-San Isabel/Purgatoire

Overview

Purgatoire Campground is a hidden gem tucked away in the San Isabel National Forest near the charming village of Cuchara, Colorado. Sitting at a high elevation of approximately 9,600 feet, this destination provides a cool, refreshing escape from the summer heat. It serves as a gateway to the rugged beauty of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, offering a tranquil environment where the sound of the wind through the trees and the nearby river dominate the local soundscape.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated along the historic Highway of Legends, a scenic byway known for its dramatic geological formations and rich history. Surrounded by dense stands of Engelmann spruce, Douglas fir, and trembling aspens, the campground provides immediate access to the North Fork of the Purgatoire River. The dramatic peaks of the Spanish Peaks and the Culebra Range provide a stunning backdrop for travelers arriving from either the south or north.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional Forest Service site, Purgatoire offers a rustic camping experience rather than a resort-style stay. There are no electric or water hookups, making it an excellent choice for self-contained RVers. Visitors will find essential facilities including vault toilets and potable water from a hand pump. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring, though travelers should always check for local fire restrictions before their arrival.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for this region. The North Fork Trail begins nearby, offering miles of exploration for hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. Anglers often frequent the river or head a short distance to Monument Lake for trout fishing. For a change of pace, the small mountain village of Cuchara offers quaint shops and local dining, reflecting the unique culture of southern Colorado’s high country.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is perfectly suited for dry campers and boondockers who prioritize scenery and solitude over modern luxuries. Because of the winding mountain roads and tighter turnarounds within the loops, it is best for small to mid-sized trailers and camper vans. It is an ideal spot for photography enthusiasts, hikers, and anyone looking to disconnect and immerse themselves in a primitive, high-altitude forest setting.

I'm not sure, but I take it this is the road to Blue and Bear Lakes. It is nice to have toilet facilities along Highway 12. The scenery today as the Aspens were turning made for a nice walk up the road a ways.

Adorable, quaint little town!! It has a hotel, bed n breakfast, restaurant, gift shops, put-put golf, a general store, and a real estate office. There is a gorgeous creek that runs through it. Can't wait to go back again!
