Pinckney SRA

Overview

Pinckney Recreation Area is a sprawling 11,000-acre wilderness paradise located in Southeast Michigan, renowned for its extensive trail networks and serene glacial lakes. Unlike highly manicured commercial resorts, this state park offers a rustic and immersive natural experience that appeals to travelers looking to disconnect from the digital world. It serves as a vital hub for outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize direct access to diverse ecosystems and quiet nights under the hardwood canopy. The park is a premier destination for those who appreciate the unrefined beauty of Michigan’s backcountry.

Location & Surroundings

Nestled in Gregory, Michigan, the park sits within a unique landscape of rolling hills, marshes, and kettle lakes formed by ancient glaciers. The surrounding area is characterized by dense hardwood forests and a complex system of interconnected waterways. Its proximity to the university town of Ann Arbor makes it an accessible escape for a weekend, yet the thick foliage and secluded lakefronts provide a sense of being deep in the remote wilderness. The park acts as a centerpiece for the Potawatomi Trail, drawing visitors from across the region to its rugged and scenic terrain.

Amenities & Park Features

RVers visiting the park typically congregate at the Bruin Lake Campground, which provides a comfortable home base with modern sites featuring electrical hookups. The facility ensures a convenient stay by offering several key amenities for those traveling in motorhomes or trailers:

  • Individual sites with 20- and 30-amp electrical service.
  • A modern restroom building equipped with hot showers and flushing toilets.
  • A designated sanitation station for easy waste disposal and fresh water fill-ups.

The park also features multiple boat launches and sandy swimming beaches, ensuring that water-based recreation is never more than a short walk from your campsite.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw at Pinckney, with the world-renowned Potawatomi Trail offering over 17 miles of challenging terrain for mountain bikers and hikers. Water lovers can spend their days exploring the famous chain of lakes by kayak or canoe, navigating through narrow channels that connect various bodies of water. Anglers frequently visit to target bass and panfish in the clear waters of Silver and Halfmoon Lakes. For a change of pace, the vibrant shops, craft breweries, and cultural attractions of nearby Chelsea and Ann Arbor are just a short drive away.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for active outdoor adventurers and families who prefer state park charm and natural beauty over luxury resort amenities. It is a true haven for mountain bikers and trail runners seeking a rugged basecamp for multi-day excursions. If you value scenic lakefront views and a quiet, wooded atmosphere where the focus remains on the environment rather than on-site commercial entertainment, Pinckney Recreation Area is an excellent fit for your Michigan RV travel style.

Has some of the best hiking trails in Michigan!! Crooked Lake and Potawatomi… excellent signage, well-marked, well-cared for. Bathrooms by the lake still unlocked and clean Nov 1! Spacious parking lots!

Rough primitive camping. Beautiful trails. Great dock on lake which is good for fishing or kayaking. A pair of swans and a pair of blue herons. Only minor co.plaint is compost toilets stank though fresh paper and lotion so clearly staff are mindful. Thank you for this beautiful park.

The area overall is nice on summer. This is a dog welcoming area, yet people think that bringing food and towels to leave them on the ground unattended is ok while dogs are playing. It is a dog friendly area and yet they complain about them and make a big fuss about it. There are no booths to buy a pass yet they want to ticket you due to the lack of information. The trails around the entrance have confusing signs about bicycles forbidden yet people just go with them too fast even though again its a dog friendly area, go farther away if you don't like dogs. The beaches are nice but there are shooting ranges that are too noisy. People with their boats are also very noisy. The rangers only care about not having you enjoy your time just to check your dogs are leashed even though they cannot swim fully leashed. Its a clean park, not that many bugs, but between the rangers and the dog haters, I'll recommend somewhere else on top of what you need to pay. We never ever saw a ranger checking around the trails for safety, and we were there for hours.

Great cross-country esc. mountain biking with high amounts of rooty, gravely, and steep terrain with a variety of intense outwashed uphills to smooth flowing descents. A good place to go if you want a 20mi day ride and still return to your starting place!

This place offers great natural (unpaved) walking trails. They had lots of signage but we did get a little confused on the route at one point. There are lakes, a playground area and lots of grassy areas. The parking was more than adequate on the day we were there. The location we were at had 1 permenant portapotty. It was a nice space regarding the fact that it was not plumbed. The route to get there included some unpaved roads but the lots and roads in the park were paved.
