Overview

Little Beaver Campground offers a classic Plumas National Forest experience nestled near the historic mountain town of La Porte, CA. Situated at an elevation of approximately 5,000 feet, this facility provides a serene escape for those looking to disconnect from modern distractions and digital noise. It serves as a quiet base for exploring the rugged, high-altitude beauty of the Northern California wilderness while providing a traditional camping atmosphere for visitors.

Location & Surroundings

Located near the scenic Sly Creek Reservoir, the park is sheltered by a dense, fragrant canopy of fir and pine trees. The surrounding environment is defined by its proximity to alpine waters and the historic charm of La Porte, which remains a hidden gem of the California Gold Country. Travelers should prepare for winding mountain roads that offer stunning views of the Sierra Nevada mountains, ensuring the drive is as memorable as the stay itself.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional Forest Service site, this is a rustic destination focused on preserving the natural environment. The park provides essential facilities including vault toilets and seasonal potable water stations. Each campsite typically includes a heavy-duty picnic table and a dedicated fire ring for evening campfires under the stars. While there are no electrical or water hookups, the sites are well-spaced to offer privacy and a true sense of mountain solitude for every visitor.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw, with the waters of Sly Creek Reservoir offering excellent opportunities for fishing, swimming, and flat-water paddling. Boaters often enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, while hikers can access a network of trails that showcase the diverse flora and fauna of the region. A short drive into historic La Porte provides a glimpse into California’s mining history and a chance to visit local mountain establishments for supplies or a meal.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for self-contained RVers who value peace and quiet over modern luxuries. It is perfect for birdwatchers, anglers, and families who want to experience the off-the-grid lifestyle without completely leaving a designated site. Little Beaver Campground provided a stunning backdrop for our three-night stay in late July. The spacious sites, accommodating up to two vehicles each, were perfect for our group of six. The campground offers a parking lot for extra vehicles, if needed. We comfortably fit two tents and a canopy on site 44. The provided food storage boxes were essential for keeping wildlife at bay. While the campground boasts beautiful scenery, we were surprised by the chilly nights, even in July. The well-maintained bathrooms with flushing toilets and hand-washing sinks with mirrors were a pleasant surprise. Although there was a notice about bacteria in the drinking water, we decided to use it, and had no issue. The lake was a short, slightly uphill, walk away. While there was no beach nearby, the lake itself was clean and inviting. We enjoyed swimming and watching the breathtaking sunsets. The campground also offers an easy and rewarding hiking trail through diverse natural surroundings. (Maybe around 5 miles) Unfortunately, the campground's campfire ban was a disappointment. While propane alternatives were permitted, it was a less-than-ideal substitute for a traditional campfire experience. Despite this minor setback, Little Beaver Campground offers exceptional value for its stunning scenery and comfortable amenities. We highly recommend it for a peaceful getaway. (I deducted one star primarily due to the somewhat longer walk to the lake, lack of beaches, and campfire ban.) ⛺⛺⛺⛺

Beautiful campground. Our sites were in loop B on reservoir side. Currently no campfires or bbq allowed. Due to drought the restrooms were closed as well. I still loved staying there. My group had a great time and water was fantastic.
