Overview
Pontiac Lake Recreation Area offers a sprawling 3,745-acre natural retreat in the heart of Oakland County. This state-managed park provides a diverse landscape ranging from lush marshes to thick woodlands, making it a premier destination for those seeking outdoor adventure. Visitors often come to enjoy the balance of tranquil lake views and high-energy recreational opportunities. It serves as a vital green space for both local residents and traveling RVers looking for a scenic base camp in Southeast Michigan.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in Waterford Township, Michigan, the park is conveniently located near the busy corridors of Metro Detroit while maintaining a surprisingly remote atmosphere. The surrounding area is characterized by the rolling hills of the Huron River watershed and the expansive waters of Pontiac Lake. This location makes it an ideal stop for travelers who want easy access to urban conveniences, such as shopping and dining, without sacrificing the peace of a forested environment.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground at Pontiac Lake features 176 campsites equipped with 20/30-amp electrical service. While the sites offer a more rustic, wooded feel, the park provides modern conveniences to ensure a comfortable stay for visitors. Essential park features include:
- Updated restroom facilities with hot showers.
- A convenient sanitation station for RV waste disposal.
- Dedicated space for pets in the on-site dog park.
These amenities help support the needs of modern RV travelers while maintaining a natural camping environment.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn here primarily for the nationally recognized mountain bike trail, an 11-mile loop that challenges even experienced riders. The lake itself is a hub for activity, featuring a massive sandy beach and excellent opportunities for boating and fishing for northern pike and bass. Those who prefer land-based activities can explore miles of equestrian and hiking trails that wind through the diverse habitats of the recreation area.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an exceptional choice for active families and outdoor athletes who want a mix of water and trail activities. It is particularly well-suited for mountain biking enthusiasts and boaters who prioritize recreation over resort-style luxury. Because of its proximity to major highways, it is also a perfect weekend getaway for Detroit-area locals or a convenient, nature-focused stopover for RVers trekking through the Great Lakes region.

Pontiac Recreational Area is an amazing place to go out with friends or by yourself. It has a decent sized beach, a great nature trail and tons of scenic sites. The beach is perfect for a picnic, lots of tables and barbecues on the grass. There’s a dog park and fishing piers. This is my go to area for walks or to watch the sunset.

Took the trail to the Scenic Overlook. Afterwards, found one tick on me and several on the dog. They do have ample signage warning of ticks in the area. The brush at the Scenic Overlook is overgrown and needs to be trimmed, so one can see the lake and the fence needs to be fixed. Between the shooting range and close proximity to the airport, this park felt noisy to me. The public use areas and bathrooms seem to be clean and well maintained. The nature is beautiful.

It's not a destination campground but it is nice enough. The playground is not a playground. It is two swings. Roads coming in and inside the campground are not maintained. Pretty rough. A few overgrown trees that I had to drive on the grass to avoid along with low branches. I'm in a 44' fifth wheel and I navigated ok but it was still tight with the overgrowth. 50amp site was great on 124.

I love this park!! So many trails and options. However, I will say that the atmosphere in the dog park has turned gloomy. Too many negligent people with out of control and aggressive dogs here now. No respect...I do HIGHLY recommend this park overall though, just skip the dog park and opt in for a trail!! We'll worth it!

Great campground, Great staff. Beach is very nice. NO NOISE CONTROL! Cussing and swearing at the top of their lungs to be heard over their blasting 3 foot tall speaker. Ruins it all. Morning till late at night!!
