Prairie Dog

Overview

Prairie Dog State Park provides a unique glimpse into the natural beauty and pioneer history of Western Kansas. Located on the shores of the Keith Sebelius Reservoir, this expansive park is named for its thriving prairie dog colony, which visitors can observe in their natural habitat. Spanning over 1,100 acres, the park offers a peaceful escape for travelers moving across the High Plains, blending outdoor recreation with significant cultural landmarks that date back to the late nineteenth century.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just a few miles west of Norton, Kansas, the park is defined by the Keith Sebelius Reservoir. The surrounding landscape features rolling shortgrass prairies and scenic lakeside views. This remote setting offers exceptionally clear night skies and a quiet atmosphere far from the noise of major interstates. It serves as a vital oasis for wildlife and a refreshing stopover for those traveling along Highway 36 through the High Plains region of the state.

Amenities & Park Features

The park accommodates RVers with a variety of site options, including many equipped with electric and water hookups. Facilities are designed for comfort and include modern shower houses, a dump station, and boat ramps for lake access. A standout feature is the historic Adobe House, a rare preserved sod dwelling from the late 1800s. Visitors can also enjoy well-maintained hiking trails, designated fishing docks, and several shaded picnic areas perfect for family gatherings during the warmer months.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty of activities, from fishing for trophy-sized walleye to boating and seasonal hunting. In the nearby city of Norton, travelers can visit the They Also Ran Gallery, which showcases portraits and histories of unsuccessful presidential candidates. A wonderful park for camping. The campground is very well cared for and clean. Gravel dites were level and easily accessed. Good shower and bathroom facilities. We didn't access the lake since we were passing through but was a beautiful body of water. The camp hostess stopped by and was very nice. Would stay here again.

Excellent park. About half the spaces are really large so you are not cramped in with back to back campers. Well manicured and clean. Only downside were the biting flies in July

This review covers Prairie Dog and Shady Rest campgrounds. I want to start out with that we didn't have very high expectations for this. We had trouble finding a spot, and didn't get to stay as long as we wanted. PD is probably more popular, mostly paved sites, some pull through, smaller trees. SR is older, gravel sites, back in, bigger trees, more shade. All sites are large, I didn't see any with sewer, supposed to be 10 overall. Lots of area mowed, this looks well cared for. We were impressed by these campgrounds. Showers are spacious, no mirrors, no electricity, just a stall and a bench with 2 hooks. Expect sites to be hard to come by, especially on the weekend, lots of longer term campers, was told, so 2nd hand, people get reservations in January.

Beautiful camping area. The primitive camping areas were large and lush. In the morning we woke up to the sounds of the bird wild life which seems to be abundant. The camp ground did not seem over populated and the non primitive side had Ramadan, Frisbee golf corse and playground.

Very clean and pretty park. Nice camping spots. Nice lake. Prairie Dog town was full of those cute little fatties. 😀
