Pt Mugu/Thornhill Broome Beach

Overview

Thornhill Broome Beach offers a unique, primitive camping experience right on the edge of the Pacific Ocean. Located within Point Mugu State Park, this stretch of sand provides a rugged alternative to more developed coastal resorts. It is a place where the roar of the surf and the scent of salt air define your stay. RVers can park directly on the sand, enjoying unobstructed ocean views and direct access to the water just steps from their doorstep.

Location & Surroundings

Situated along a narrow strip of land between the Pacific Coast Highway and the ocean, the park is approximately 15 miles north of Malibu. The scenery is dominated by the massive sand dunes across the road and the sprawling blue horizon of the Pacific. While the proximity to the highway means traffic noise is a reality during the day, the dramatic sunsets and the evening sound of crashing waves create an immersive coastal atmosphere that feels truly wild.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a dry camping destination, meaning there are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups available for RVs. Each site typically includes a picnic table and a fire ring for evening beach fires under the stars. While facilities are basic, including portable toilets and cold outdoor showers, the park does provide shared water spigots. Visitors must be fully self-contained to enjoy the stay comfortably, as the focus here is on a minimalist, nature-focused experience without the distractions of modern technology.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do, from surf fishing and swimming to exploring the extensive trail system of Point Mugu State Park. The nearby Sycamore Cove offers more sheltered beach access for families, while hikers can tackle the challenging trek up to Mugu Peak for panoramic views of the coastline. For a change of pace, a short drive south takes you into the heart of Malibu for iconic sightseeing, upscale dining, and local boutique shopping.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for self-sufficient travelers who prioritize location and scenery over luxury amenities. It is a favorite for those who want to wake up to the sunrise over the water and spend their days with their toes in the sand. If you enjoy rustic beach camping and can manage without hookups for a few days, Thornhill Broome offers one of the most accessible and affordable ways to stay overnight on a California beach.

First time beach camping ever and this place set the bar high. Awesome views. Chill vibes. Great waves. Saw seals and dolphins. Firewood for sale near entrance. Waking up to waves crashing is amazing. Will definitely be back. Book early!

Kevin and I stayed at Thornhill Broome Campground for my birthday, and it turned into such a special coastal getaway If you’re looking for beach camping in Malibu or a campground right on the ocean in California, this spot is truly something special. The campsites are set directly along the beach, so you’re falling asleep to the sound of waves and waking up with the ocean just steps away. That alone made the whole experience feel peaceful and unforgettable. There’s a good amount of space between sites, so it doesn’t feel overcrowded, and the overall atmosphere is calm and relaxing perfect for a quiet escape or slow weekend. We also felt very safe. State park rangers were patrolling regularly, and we even saw highway patrol throughout the day, which added extra peace of mind. A few helpful things to know: • Check in is at 2 PM, check out is at 12 PM • Firewood is available from the camp host (super convenient) • The gate closes at 8 PM if you leave, make sure you’re back before then It does get a bit windy at night, and the nearby highway can be slightly noisy in the morning, but it didn’t take away from the experience for us. The bathrooms are porta potties, but they were cleaned often and didn’t smell, which we appreciated. We spent our time walking the shoreline, watching the sunset (absolutely stunning here), and just slowing down together. It’s one of those places where the simple moments end up meaning the most. If you’re searching for a peaceful oceanfront campground in Malibu with beautiful views and easy beach access, this is such a great find. Definitely one of our favorite little escapes and a birthday I’ll never forget!

Campground right on the sand on the beach. Sunsets were beautiful! Picnic table, fire rings with grill. Porta potty was clean-ish. No showers. Firewood available near the gate. Hard to get a spot on the weekends though. Overall, we loved it here, peaceful and the sunset was spectacular!

This campsite is great. You can drive any car, not worry about low ground clearance cuz the path is paved. Each campsite has a picnic table and fire pit and is literally right on the beach. Like right there. Porta potties every 5 spaces, if you're getting in the water there's a ton of rocks where the waves crash so wear water shoes. If you fish, it's hard getting your cast out past the rocks and it's easy to lose a couple lures

Stood 1 day. Wish I stood 1 week. So relaxing and peaceful. Listening to the waves crash none stop is great. Weather was a little warm. Extremely windy at night. Its right next to Highway 1, so you get traffic sounds all day and very little late night. Bathrooms are portapotties and are kept pretty clean. Spigot of water and no trash pickup. So take it out!
