Refugio State Beach
Overview
Refugio State Beach offers a quintessential California coastal camping experience along the Gaviota Coast. Characterized by its iconic palm tree-lined shoreline and a crescent-shaped bay, this park provides a tranquil escape from the busier hubs of Southern California. It is a place where the mountains meet the sea, creating a picturesque backdrop for RVers who prioritize natural beauty and direct beach access over resort-style luxuries. The atmosphere here is laid-back and focused on the stunning environment.
Location & Surroundings
Situated approximately 20 miles west of Santa Barbara, the park sits in a protected cove that keeps the waters relatively calm compared to adjacent beaches. The Gaviota Coast remains one of the few undeveloped stretches of shoreline in the region, offering sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and the Channel Islands on clear days. The proximity to the Santa Ynez Mountains provides a dramatic contrast, with coastal bluffs and sycamore trees framing the campground and protecting it from heavy coastal winds.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a rustic destination, meaning RVers should arrive prepared for dry camping without utility hookups. Each site includes a picnic table and a fire ring, with communal restrooms and coin-operated showers available nearby. Notable features include:
- A seasonal general store offering basic camping supplies and snacks.
- Direct access to a protected swimming and kayaking beach.
- A paved multi-use trail that connects to nearby El Capitan State Beach.
The park is designed to highlight the natural environment, keeping developments minimal to preserve the expansive coastal views.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw here, with the calm cove serving as a premier spot for sea kayaking and paddleboarding. Anglers often fish from the shore, while hikers can enjoy the bluff-top trails that offer exceptional birdwatching opportunities. For a change of pace, the historic charm and upscale dining of Santa Barbara are a short drive away, and the nearby Santa Ynez Valley offers world-class wineries and the unique Danish-themed village of Solvang.
Who This Park Is Best For
Refugio is ideal for travelers who enjoy a family-oriented atmosphere and don't mind a back-to-basics camping style. It appeals specifically to those who want to wake up to the sound of crashing waves and spend their days on the sand. Because it lacks full hookups, it is best suited for self-contained RVers who appreciate a quiet, scenic environment where the focus remains on the natural California coastal ecosystem and outdoor adventure.

An absolutely beautiful view. Good beach for kids. Not very deep water and not very big waves.

Incredibly scenic campground. Hiker biker spots for $10 a night right by the beach! Water was perfect. Only complaint is the lack of outlets for charging.

Love this beach! Great place to spend the day! They have a little store for campers and beach goers incase you forget anything.

Last weekend I tried out 3 Hike and Bike locations ( Refugio, Carpinteria and Leo Carrillo) around Santa Barbara. Refugio is the closest to the beach and an optimal location right next to the beach but it is also next to the kids playground.

Had a great time with my family, but I do have to warn you about the showers and restrooms. The showers take tokens for warm water. There's only 1 machine on each side of the lake for both bathrooms. They only take card. Next are the restrooms, no soap or anything to dry your hands with. Be sure to bring your own every time. And to be on the look out for the sparrows above you as you go to the restroom. There's piles of poop under them for a reason. Besides that, the close proximity to the beach and the relative quietness of the other campers make it a great place to camp. The views and the sounds of the ground squirrels during the day and the racoons at night make each day a adventure of its own. Don't forget to read about the beaches history with New Spain!
