Refugio State Beach

Gorgeous beach with small waves. Perfect for small kids and boogie boards. Some surfing out at the point.

Very beautiful! Just yards from the ocean. Very clean sites and quiet. The only cons: dogs aren't allowed on the beach and at my particular site in most of it you couldn't drive tent stakes.

The beach was very nice and they have a campground right next to it. There are three oil platforms out in the ocean and after walking, there was black stuff that looked like tar stuck to the bottom of our feet and shoes.

I didn't stay there, just drove through it, but the location was awesome, and the palm trees give you lots of shade. Someone's had mentioned that the showers require tokens for warm water, and I think the bathrooms need a tokens, but I'm not sure. I saw some scuba divers and Surfers there and the waves are much bigger than at the El Capitan Beach just a few miles down the road.

Beautiful beach, not to crowded away from the parking lots. Was able to walk for almost half an hour before rocks and rise blocked the way. Once away from the parking, camping and picnic areas it's a clean beach beneath the cliffs. I loved it.

An absolutely beautiful view. Good beach for kids. Not very deep water and not very big waves.

Incredibly scenic campground. Hiker biker spots for $10 a night right by the beach! Water was perfect. Only complaint is the lack of outlets for charging.

Love this beach! Great place to spend the day! They have a little store for campers and beach goers incase you forget anything.

Last weekend I tried out 3 Hike and Bike locations ( Refugio, Carpinteria and Leo Carrillo) around Santa Barbara. Refugio is the closest to the beach and an optimal location right next to the beach but it is also next to the kids playground.

Had a great time with my family, but I do have to warn you about the showers and restrooms. The showers take tokens for warm water. There's only 1 machine on each side of the lake for both bathrooms. They only take card. Next are the restrooms, no soap or anything to dry your hands with. Be sure to bring your own every time. And to be on the look out for the sparrows above you as you go to the restroom. There's piles of poop under them for a reason. Besides that, the close proximity to the beach and the relative quietness of the other campers make it a great place to camp. The views and the sounds of the ground squirrels during the day and the racoons at night make each day a adventure of its own. Don't forget to read about the beaches history with New Spain!

Beautiful beach and a lot of surfers! Camping available at 45.00 a night, not much shade but the views are incredible. 10.00 day pass

Quiet nice beach with great waves for surfing, lots of rocks to pick from, bbq grills, benches and a basketball court. Had a great family time.

Have driven past this location 100 times but never explored it. There's a small protected cove with a walkable sandy beach. As the tide comes in there's no much room left to walk so you have to step up to the parking and camping level. But when you're on the sand, there's no freeway noise. The camping area has about 65 spaces, all adjacent to each other. The best ones would be 34 or 35. Everyone (when I was there) was very civilized, with no load music, etc. In the camping areas you can hear the freeway noise above.
