Richard B. Russell

Overview

Richard B. Russell State Park offers a serene escape on the shores of one of Georgia's most impressive reservoirs. Unlike more crowded parks, this destination focuses on the natural beauty of the 26,650-acre Richard B. Russell Lake. It provides a quiet atmosphere where the sound of the wind through the pines and the gentle lap of water against the shore take center stage for visiting RVers seeking a peaceful retreat into nature.

Location & Surroundings

Located just outside Elberton, Georgia, known globally as the Granite Capital of the World, the park sits nestled in the rolling hills of the Piedmont region. The surrounding area is characterized by dense woodlands and the expansive blue waters of the Savannah River basin. The drive into the park is scenic, transitioning from the historic charm of Elberton into a lush, protected natural peninsula that feels miles away from the bustle of city life.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground is well-equipped for modern travelers, featuring 28 spacious campsites with full hookups including water, power, and sewer. Many sites offer views of the water or easy access to the shoreline for morning walks. Facilities include clean comfort stations, laundry services, and a dump station. Beyond the campsites, visitors have access to the Arrowhead Pointe Golf Course, which is often ranked among the best public courses in the state due to its challenging layout and stunning water views.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water sports are the primary draw here, with several boat ramps providing easy access for fishing and kayaking. Anglers frequently visit for the abundant bass and crappie found in the lake's depths. On land, the park boasts over six miles of hiking and biking trails that wind through the forest. For a unique afternoon, guests can play the on-site disc golf course or head into town to explore the local granite monuments and museums that showcase the area's unique industrial craftsmanship.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal fit for outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize recreation and relaxation over commercial resort amenities. It is a fantastic choice for golfers who want to stay just minutes from the first tee, as well as boaters looking for reliable lake access. Because of its peaceful environment, it is also perfectly suited for retired travelers and families who enjoy a slower pace of life centered around nature, wildlife viewing, and evening campfires.

R B R state park has very nice accommodations. I wish the fish cleaning station was functional. Lights not working and no running water. Light bulbs out at the cottage entrance. Inside was nice and clean.

Great park with an awesome lake that is not busy. Many coves to hang out in or hang out in the main channel!! Cabins are in nice conditions with some work needed done to the docks. It was a bit pricey I feel for what you get buy hey, you get a cabin on the water with a dock so who's complaining. I feel total pice should be just under 200/night not over 200. Staff was friendly and nice. Quiet place for a family getaway! We will be back next summer for sure!!

Stayed in a lakefront cabin in January primarily looking for dark skies for star/planet gazing; worked out great. Cabins are functional, a little worn with a screened deck, picnic table, inside fireplace and outside fire ring. Each cabin has its own floating dock (all the docks are different construction and modestly different sizes). Our cabin was about ~50 feet above the lake with a downhill dirt path from cabin to dock. All in all, skies were clear and we had a great time.

Beautiful park, great trails, encountered no souls on the hike other than a few deer and the presence of Mother Nature.
