Richard B. Russell
Richard B. Russell (1897-1971) was an American politician who served as a United States Senator from Georgia from 1933 to 1971. He was born in Elberton, Georgia, and attended the University of Georgia, where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Literary Society. He served in the United States Army during World War I and was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives from 1921 to 1931. He was elected to the United States Senate in 1932 and served until his death in 1971. During his time in the Senate, he was a strong advocate for civil rights and was instrumental in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. He was also a strong supporter of the military and was a key figure in the establishment of the Department of Defense. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1989.
