Richard Bong SRA/Sunrise - Sunset

Overview

Richard Bong State Recreation Area offers an expansive landscape for travelers exploring Southeast Wisconsin. Originally intended to be a Cold War-era jet fighter base, the site has been transformed into a diverse 4,515-acre haven of managed prairies and wetlands. The Sunrise and Sunset campgrounds provide a peaceful retreat for RVers looking to immerse themselves in nature. Whether you are staying for a weekend or a longer stretch, the park provides a classic state park experience characterized by wide-open spaces and a unique sense of historical transformation.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Kansasville, WI, the park is conveniently located between Milwaukee and Chicago, making it an accessible getaway for urban dwellers seeking fresh air. The landscape is dominated by rolling grasslands and the sparkling waters of Wolf Lake. Because the site was once cleared for an airfield, the horizons are broad, offering some of the best unobstructed sunset views in the region. The surrounding Kenosha County area maintains a rural charm, providing a quiet buffer from the hustle of nearby metropolitan centers.

Amenities & Park Features

The Sunrise and Sunset campgrounds offer over 200 individual sites, with electric hookups available at many locations to accommodate modern RVs. Facilities include well-maintained shower buildings, flush toilets, and a sanitary dump station for visitor convenience. While the sites offer a more rustic feel than private resorts, the inclusion of fire rings and picnic tables ensures a comfortable stay. Outdoor enthusiasts also benefit from the park's specialized features, such as a dedicated model airplane runway and extensive multi-use trails.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the campgrounds, visitors can enjoy Wolf Lake for swimming, fishing, or non-motorized paddling. The park is a premier destination for birdwatching, as the prairie restoration attracts numerous migratory species throughout the year. For those willing to venture out, the historic city of Burlington is just a short drive away. Additionally, the park's proximity to Lake Geneva allows for easy day trips to enjoy upscale dining and boat tours before returning to the quiet of the prairie.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for nature lovers and active families who prioritize outdoor recreation and space over resort-style luxury. It is a fantastic choice for those traveling with pets or those involved in specialized hobbies like falconry or RC flying. RVers seeking a quiet, scenic spot to disconnect while remaining close to the amenities of Southeast Wisconsin will find it a perfect fit. It is best suited for travelers who appreciate expansive landscapes and the simple pleasures of a campfire.

Richard Bong State Rec area is a very nice Natural Area with well-maintained campsites that are decently secluded from each other and a nice grassy trail system which is great for walking hiking or even biking

Our campsite (#307) was literally on a hill, which the pictures don't show. We had to set up our tent on the only flat ground available, the gravel parking pad. Luckily we have a roof top tent because staking a ground tent would've been impossible. Also, there is nothing to do. There is hiking and a beach, but you have to drive a long distance to both. The bathrooms and showers were pretty nice.

The place is really beautiful, however I wish the horse trails did not intersect with people trails. Our dog decided to roll around, but it was in a big pile of horse poop?! Don’t forget your bug spray! You are in & out of woods. They have different length trails, some are 1-2 miles, some are 4-8 miles. The visitor center has a lot of really cool animals that were stuffed, along with a few live ones, like the turtles.

I can only speak for Sunrise side but we plan on going back to check out Sunset which I believe is newer. The good: The sites are heavily wooded, so even though you're not miles away from your neighbors, you cannot see them. (Check pics). It's basically like you have your own backyard in the woods. The camp host was amazing. Rhonda and I forget her husband's name. Very informative and accommodating. The girl at the front gate and the DNR folks were super nice. Everything is super clean. (Help keep it that way). Everyone is QUIET. If you're here to party, you picked the wrong place. Kick back and enjoy nature. The bad; The bike trails have several missing markers and we ended up blocked by two downed trees. There is no water on there, so come prepared. The one well we found was dry. Overall, we will be back to check out the other side of the park. For the price, I would call our weekend a win
