Rickwood Caverns
Overview
Rickwood Caverns State Park offers a unique subterranean adventure in the heart of Alabama. Known for its miracle mile of underground formations, the park provides a cool escape from the surface heat. The atmosphere is quiet and rustic, allowing travelers to connect with nature while exploring ancient limestone caves that remain at a steady 62 degrees throughout the year. It serves as a peaceful retreat for those looking to experience the geological wonders of the Deep South.
Location & Surroundings
Located in Warrior, Alabama, the park is conveniently positioned just off Interstate 65, making it an accessible stop for those traveling through the Appalachian foothills. Despite its proximity to major transportation routes, the secluded forest setting makes the park feel worlds away from the city. The surrounding Blount County landscape is characterized by rolling hills and dense woodlands, providing a beautiful backdrop for a weekend getaway or a scenic mid-journey rest stop.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground at Rickwood Caverns is intentionally small and intimate, featuring 13 developed sites equipped with water and electric hookups. Travelers have access to a bathhouse and a seasonal Olympic-sized swimming pool, which is uniquely fed by the chilly waters sourced from the cave system itself. For those staying above ground, the park offers several miles of hiking trails that wind through impressive limestone outcrops and diverse local flora, including the popular Fossil Mountain Trail.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Beyond the guided cave tours, visitors can explore the famous Blount County covered bridges, which are located just a short drive from the park boundaries. A twenty-minute trip south leads to the vibrant city of Birmingham, where the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and Vulcan Park and Museum offer rich cultural depth. For outdoor enthusiasts, the nearby Locust Fork of the Black Warrior River is a popular spot for seasonal kayaking and fishing excursions.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for families and geology enthusiasts who enjoy educational experiences alongside their outdoor recreation. Because of its smaller footprint and quiet evenings, it is a perfect match for RVers who prefer a peaceful, nature-focused stay over a high-activity commercial resort. It is especially appealing to road trippers looking for a unique, cool environment during the humid Alabama summer months or those seeking a quiet home base near Birmingham.

My family and I just came to the caverns for “Wonderland under Warrior” and the lights/decorations are phenomenal! Very worth the entry price. Our boys got to see Santa, who gave them a little velvet bag with fools gold in it, and then the Grinch is inside the cave! The cave is beautiful and fairly easy to navigate with only a few steps. Highly recommend this!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Five-Star Experience! We had a fantastic visit to the caverns! The customer service was wonderful from the very start. I called ahead with a few questions, and the staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and gave me accurate information. Their website was also fully up to date and matched everything we were told once we arrived, which I really appreciated. Our tour was scheduled for 12:00, and it started right on time. Our tour guide was amazing—full of energy, super informative, and kept everyone laughing with great jokes throughout the entire hour-long tour. You could tell she truly enjoyed what she does. The caverns themselves were beautiful and absolutely worth the visit. That said, I do want to offer a couple of helpful notes for future visitors that I didn’t see clearly emphasized online. There are a lot of steps—over 360—and some of them are surprisingly steep. The final climb (about 100 steps straight up) definitely had people catching their breath at the end. Also, there are several very tight spaces. I’m on the smaller side and even I felt a bit squeezed at times. If you’re claustrophobic or on the larger side, just be aware that some sections are narrow. Overall, though, the experience was wonderful. The tour was well-run, the caverns were stunning, and the staff was top-notch. Highly recommend this adventure—just be prepared for the stairs and tight spots!

Thank you Hannah for the Befriending Bats cave tour experience! I learned some interesting facts about bats, saw a couple bats, heard some cave history highlights and got my steps in throughout the cave journey. Loads of fun! I highly recommend you check out Hannah’s upcoming activities!

SAT 2025.10.18 ~06:30, the Entrance Gate of Rickwood Caverns S.P. wasn't open yet. A few minutes later, the Gate opened for a vehicle that was exiting, and i got in for my early morning walk of the Park trails (before going on to the reserved 10:00 Cave Tour). It was relatively quiet in the Park; a few Campers were out and about, and a Ranger too. ~07:15, i went for my ~3+ miles CW-Loop walk of the Trails. Please note the Closure of Moss Rock Connector Trail. The Trails were in good condition and well maintained; relatively peaceful and quiet, some bird singings .. No other person during the first ~1.5 miles, then a 4-person Jogging Team who i encountered 3 times; they were Loop-Jogging the Picnic Trail 👍🙃
